Team story

[p]As many of you will know, we sadly lost our daughter Liberty in October 2017 after she fought a courageous battle with Ewing Sarcoma, a rare and very aggressive form of primary Bone Cancer. She had just celebrated her 14th birthday and our lives have been changed forever, she has left a gaping hole that cannot be filled.[/p][p]Liberty was diagnosed on her 13th birthday and throughout her treatment was as ansparking inspiration to so many with how bravely and valiantly she faced everything thrown at her, from gruelling chemotherapy, hair loss, chronic nausea and biopsies, to limb salvage surgeries, radiotherapy and a stem cell transplant. She refused to let this cruel disease and her cancer diagnosis define her and the smile for which she was so well known and wicked sense of humour rarely faded, despite everything she had to endure.[/p][p]When Libs discovered that the cancer had spread just days from finishing treatment in August 2017, and that nothing further could be done, her greatest wish was to not be forgotten and for no other young person or family to suffer and be ripped apart in the same way. [/p][p]And so her idea for Liberty's Legacy was born and set up within days of her passing to raise awareness and vital funds for Ewings research in her name. Since February 1st 2018, Liberty's Legacy has been a special fund of the Bone Cancer Research Trust, with all monies raised ring-fenced specifically for research into Ewing's as per her wishes. [/p][p]Already the funds we have raised to date have had a direct impact with several research projects well underway. But we know it's just the tip of the iceberg and so much more needs to be done. Every penny raised really does count and can make a difference if we are to change the landscape for future children diagnosed with this brutal disease.[/p][p]Survival rates for Ewing's have shockingly not improved in nearly 40 years due to decades of neglect by the larger cancer charities to research rarer cancers like Ewings, yet still last year funding for research into primary bone cancer by them reached a 16 year low. The treatment protocol that Liberty received was not only designed for adults, but was also decades old. With your help we urgently need to change this so that children like Liberty have a fighting chance - she had so much to offer and deserved so much more. [/p][p]We are determined to honour her Legacy and will keep on fighting and raising funds in her name...#UntilTheresACure[/p][p]Thank you for reading and thank you for donating.[/p][p]To find out more about Liberty's Legacy, please follow us on Facebook @libertyslegacycharity[/p][p]Instagram @ Libertys_Legacy[/p][p]Twitter @libertyslegacy3[/p]
