My story

[p]I am riding to help Felix who has Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy [/p][p]In December 2014, my good friends Alasdair and Robyn, got the heart-breaking news that their four year old son, Felix, had been diagnosed with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, an incurable and fatal muscle wasting disease that kills more children than any other genetic condition. There is accelerating deterioration from birth, resulting in a significant decrease in quality of life by age 7 to 8, wheelchair dependency by early teens, total dependency by late teens and a lingering death in mid-twenties from lung failure and heart disease. [/p][p]I don't think many of us can truly imagine what it must be like to receive that kind of brutal news. Devastating doesn't come close. However, Ali and his wife Robyn have found limitless reserves of determination and energy to do whatever they can to make the future view better for Felix. And then they do more. And more. [/p][p]Thankfully, real progress is being made in the development of new treatments that have the potential to alter and hopefully even cure Duchenne. And in the shorter term, ongoing research is identifying a combination of drugs approved for the treatment of other diseases that are showing real promise in slowing and perhaps even halting the progress of the disease.[/p][p]Whether it’s novel or repurposed drugs, you won't be surprised to hear that their development costs a lot of money, which is why I’m cycling (with Ali et al) from London to Monaco, covering 1,500 km and climbing 18,000 m in 9 days, with the aim being to raise as much money as possible to further vital research and get a combination or repurposed drugs in to D-UK funded trials and patients as quickly as possible.[/p][p]All the money raised will go to Duchenne UK, the charity founded by Emily Crossley and Alex Johnson, both mothers of Duchenne boys. They’re unbelievably passionate and effective and almost all (90% plus) of the money they raise and receive funds research and trials. The charity really is transforming the future for children with this dreadful disease.[/p][p]I know that there are hundreds of charities that need your donations, but it would be amazing if you would consider this as one of those you (or your company) support this year? There really is no time to waste if we’re going to save this generation of boys, so your generosity is massively appreciated.[/p]
