My story

[p]In 2011, my life took a major new direction (it is complicated so I will spare the details!). In response I decided to run Edinburgh Marathon for Children 1st, a charity which promotes children's rights and helps children recover from abuse. On a personal level, running acted as a powerful meditative tool to help me refocus and navigate through in a healthy way whilst doing something positive for others. This year marks the 10 year anniversary of my new life and whilst brushing off the cobwebs of Covid I thought to myself… Yes, I’ll mark it by running another Marathon! Indeed I have always been curious about running the London Marathon and when an opportunity came up to represent another charity close to my heart as a Speech and Language Therapist, I grabbed it! [/p][p]Afasic is a charity which was set up to support children with Developmental Language Disorder (DLD). This invisible disability is something many people have never heard of and yet it affects an average of 2 children in every class room. [/p][p]Afasic, voice for life…[/p][p]Children, young people and families affected by Developmental Language Disorder (DLD) have been hit hard by the Covid-19 pandemic and its impact on education and therapy services. They need our help now more than ever. [/p][p] Latest research shows that at least 7% of children and young people are affected by Developmental Language Disorder (Norbury et al. 2016); an average of 2 per school class.[/p][p] “Children are surrounded by language and for those who have difficulties acquiring language, their difficulties pervade most aspects of their everyday lives - interactions with families, attempts to make and keep friends, learning about their world and their education.” Gascoigne (2006). [/p][p] “Speech, language and communication skills have great significance for the on-going and successful development of all children and young people. Competence in oral language is crucial for later academic success, positive self-esteem and improved life chances.” (Snow & Powell 2004)[/p][p] In 2019 the RCSLT reported that: ‘Speech, language and communication needs (SLCN) is the most common type of primary need for pupils with SEND at 22%’. Double that of autism. Source – England school census January 2019.[/p][p]Examples of how your support can make a difference... [/p][p]£10 a month for a year will keep the Afasic parents’ helpline open for a day.[/p][p]£20 pays for a free family information pack.[/p][p]£30 pays for a parent to get specialist, tailored information, advice & resources from the parents’ helpline to better understand their child’s difficulties and how they can best support them.[/p][p]£100 pays for 2 parents to take part in a training course on DLD so they can better support their child.[/p][p]£375 pays for a child to attend a specialist primary to secondary transition course.[/p][p]£3,750 will fund a weeklong transition summer school course, supporting children about to move from primary to secondary school.[/p][p]£6,250 will keep the parent helpline open for 6 months.[/p][p]For every £1 received...[/p][p]76p goes directly to work with children, young people and their families, living with DLD[/p][p]15p goes towards the governance, administration and running costs of the organisation[/p][p]9p is invested to generate further income.[/p][p][br][/p][p]***As a twist, you can add a track to my running sound track when sponsor me. Just leave your wish in the comments when you donate. I promise I will add it no matter what! (please be kind!)***[/p][p] [/p][p] [/p]
