Team story

[p]I’m not too sure where to start my story. And to be honest, it’s not even really my story to tell.[/p][p]December 2013. Dad sat us down and told us he had cancer. We all knew it was going to be bad news when he called a family meeting. Of course he followed with “I’m going to be fine,” “of course I will beat this” And, Dad being Dad, we didn’t doubt it for a second.[/p][p]He lost his fight in August 2016. Only he didn’t lose. His life was taken from him with no choice of winning or losing. He fought every single second, minute, hour, day after day. He never moaned, always wanting to prove that he was better than the vile disease which had taken over his body.[/p][p]In Dads final months, he was cared for at the Sue Ryder Leckhampton Court Hospice. Initially, the thought of visiting him there filled me with dread. That dread quickly turned to joy. The hospice itself was beautiful, as were the staff. I can happily say that his last days were spent laughing in the sunshine in the beautiful gardens. The staff kept his dignity the entire time and we will forever be grateful for that.[/p][p]Eventually, the day came where Dad had to leave us. It was all such a blur. The nurses were there making sure Dad was comfortable, checking in on all of us and quite honestly, being amazing. It seemed so sudden even though we all knew it was coming. I will never, ever forget that day.[/p][p]If you knew my Dad, you were so very lucky. There really was no one quite like him.[/p][p]Despite the absolute devastation we were all feeling, the staff at the Hospice provided us with care, comfort and reassurance. They gave us all the time we needed to be with Dad and allowed us all to be with him for every moment.[/p][p]The sad reality is, so many people go through the heart break of losing a family member or friend. And it’s not only cancer that takes people from their loved ones. There are hundreds of illnesses; people diagnosed daily, who then become patients at the Hospice.[/p][p]On 8th July 2017, my husband Paul, brother in law Mark and I, are taking on a 60 mile/100km 24 hour walk along a stretch of the Cotswold Way. This will be no easy feat and for any one that knows me…this will be extremely hard! An entire 24 hours of walking sounds daunting but thinking of all those people who are fighting daily…every second,  minute, hour, will get us through to the end.[/p][p]We would love to raise as much money as we can for the Hospice so would appreciate any donation that you can make, big or small. [/p] So dig deep guys, you really can make all the difference. Thank you x[lt]br /[gt][lt]br /[gt]Through Virgin Money Giving, you can sponsor us and donations will be quickly processed and passed to charities. Virgin Money Giving is a not for profit organisation and will claim gift aid on a charity's behalf where the donor is eligible for this. We really appreciate all your support and thank you for any donations.
