To celebrate my anniversary I wanted to give something back to the community in which I have been able to thrive, not only as a business, but also as an individual.[/p][p]What am I going to do?[/p][p]I have chosen to really challenge myself by walking the 109 mile Cleveland Way. Raising £10,000 along the way![/p][p]To add to my challenge I will be wild camping - crazy I know and I am very nervous about spending hours alone in a tent in the pitch dark with only the local wildlife to keep me company (I think I'll take ear plugs).[/p][p]I will also be carrying everything I need for the 7 day walk! I've no idea how much it will all weigh but I am going to practice by carrying a few bricks around with me on my training walks!!![/p][p]I will be heading off uphill on Saturday 2nd June, my backpack will be bulging with stuff, my knees will be buckling under the weight, but I will have a smile on my face as I know that you will all be cheering me on from your sofa - well, maybe it'll be more of a grimace :-)[/p][p]I'll be finishing in Filey on Friday 8th June tired and relieved but probably already starting to think about what my next adventure will be...[/p][p]Why am I doing all this?[/p][p]4 years ago my husband and I were totally devastated by the loss of two children as a result of an adoption disruption. It was clear to us that the support needed by vulnerable children was just not available. There was no money and no urgency to the long term support that was needed.[/p][p]It's important to both of us that the children and young people in our community have access to the support they need to thrive and to grow into happy and resilient adults.[/p][p]I can't do anything now for the children we lost, but I want to try and make a difference to the lives of other children and young people. I want to try and prevent what happened to our children from happening again. [/p][p]Who is going to benefit?[/p][p]The charities I have chosen to benefit are The Island (Enhancing the quality of life for vulnerable children and young people in York) and SASH (Working to prevent homelessness in young people aged 16-25 in York, North Yorkshire & East Yorkshire).[/p][p]The Island offers support to vulnerable 8-13 years olds in York who are struggling to cope at home, at school, or in the wider community, or who are experiencing difficult transitions in their lives. The Island links these young people with volunteer mentors with whom they meet on a weekly basis over the course of a year (or longer if required). This allows them to develop supportive, ongoing relationships, whilst also providing them with the undivided attention and the 'islands of space and time’ they need to increase their confidence and self-esteem, participate in worthwhile recreational activities, and move forward in their lives.[/p][p]SASH run supported lodgings schemes which help young people develop the skills they need to live on their own. They provide an emergency nightstop service that makes a difference to young people's lives when most needed.[/p][p]Both charities need your support. They only exist because people in our community care enough to help them do what they do.[/p][p]Your contributions will have a direct impact on the lives of vulnerable children and young people in your community.[/p][p]What do I want from you?[/p][p]I truly believe that a progressive and happy community is one that supports those within the community that need it most.[/p][p]If you live in Yorkshire, or if you run a business in Yorkshire, please consider donating whatever you can to this cause. If you don't live in Yorkshire please don't feel left out - you can still contribute :-) [/p][p]If you have connections with local media and you would like to help me to spread the word and raise more money please get in touch. The more people that know about what I am trying to do the better.[/p][p]Please share this like crazy! Let's make this a big deal in York, Yorkshire & beyond![/p][p]If you feel that you can contribute or help in any other way please do get in touch. [/p][p]Please give whatever you can. Every penny raised will make a difference to a child or young person in your community. [/p][p]Thank you for taking the time to watch my video and read my story. [/p][p]Yours very gratefully in anticipation,[/p][p]Catherine xxx[/p][p]P.S. I will be sharing the ups and downs of my training on Facebook so feel free to pop over and follow me if you want to get all the gory details...[/p]
