My story

[p]I've always wanted to try and run a marathon. I only wanted to do it once, and it had be London! I was lucky enough to get a ballot place for 2019 to run with Gregor but in October 2018, before I could even start training, I slipped a disc in my back and walking, let alone running, became a challenge. Fortunately I was able to defer my place to 2020 and was able to start training again in January - only for the race be cancelled in April, and then cancelled again in October. The option to run it virtually was there, but initially I wasn't tempted. The idea of running it on my own, without 45,000 fellow runners, the landmarks of London and the encouraging crowds is really daunting. But then I realised it was an opportunity to help support some worthwhile charities and make 2020 memorable for a good reason. As this is a 'lockdown marathon' I was reflecting on the things that have become so important to me this year and that should be accessible to everyone: a safe & relaxing home, access to enough food and essentials and beautiful outdoor spaces to exercise and escape. This is why I've chosen Crisis, The Trussell Trust and The Woodland Trust to benefit equally from any money I can raise. I also want to support The Cowshed - a Woodley-based charity that supports individuals and families referred to them with clothing, toiletries and other essentials. I can't work out how to add them to this fundraising page, so here's the deal: whatever I raise for each of the 3 charities listed here, I'll donate the same to The Cowshed.[/p][p]If you've ever seen me run, you'll know I'm definitely not a natural! It won't be fast or elegant - the aim is just to cover 26.2 miles if I can. I've resisted putting this page up until now as the last 2 weeks I've had a bad cold that won't go away - but I've decided, sod it, I'll have a go anyway! Please know that whatever happens, I'll have tried my best, and I've just had it confirmed today that I will get another chance to run the 'real' London Marathon in April 2022. I will gladly accept with huge thanks any donation that you feel able to give to help these charities to help everyone who needs them.[/p]

Way too close to my 2001 time for my liking, given I was over 20 years younger than you then.

A tremendous feat Cath, particularly to do this without all the supporting crowds in London and after your back injury. A truly amazing achievement!
