My story

[p]It was two years ago, when I first arrived in Marietta, Pennsylvania, alone and bored, that I pulled on my trainers and jogged round the block - I could never have envisaged what would become of that first one mile run.[/p] [p]I’m now signed up to run the 2012 London Marathon on the 22[sup]nd[/sup] April![/p] [p]So, those of you who know me well will know that such an endeavour as running a marathon is maybe way out of my league. I believe that I’m biomechanically flawed (running like Charlie Chaplin) and even at school, was always puffed out by half time of any sports match that I was involved in. I’m going to prove it to you and myself, that I can do it![/p] [p]This new addiction to running and my everyday existence has however been marred by sporadic back pain, which I’ve continually suffered with since my teenage years. I’ve met many other brave people during my life whose pain and often silent suffering rightly trivialises my own problems. I was disappointed when I didn’t secure a ballot place in the marathon, but very excited to learn of the charity: BackCare, which I have decided to raise money for and run on behalf of.[/p] [p]BackCare, the only national charity for back pain, has made significant progress in reducing the burden of back pain by providing support and education to everyone affected by back pain. To date, BackCare has:[/p] [ul] [li]Set up a telephone helpline to assist people with back pain[/li] [li]Produced numerous award winning information booklets [/li] [li]Developed a highly visible website[/li] [li]Awarded more than £1 million in back pain research funding[/li] [li]Successfully lobbied governmental and non-governmental bodies to take action on providing effective back care[/li] [/ul] [p]BackCare’s plans for the future?[/p] [p]They don’t want to stop there. In 2008, back pain affected almost 50% of adults in the UK – that’s 30 million people.  4 out of 5 of us will experience back pain at some stage in our lives and it is just as common in adolescents as it is in adults, with 30% of teenagers affected. Back pain has a significant and sometimes devastating impact on personal lives; back pain also results in more than £1.6 billion in health care costs each year.  Similarly, almost 4 million working days were lost as a result of back pain in 2005-06 and back pain is the number two reason for sickness absence in the UK.[/p] [p]I’ve set a target of £2,012 to raise for BackCare. It seems like a long way off at the moment, but I’m hoping with your help that I can smash this target and make a difference to people’s lives.[/p] [p]If you or someone else you know has been affected by back pain, I’m sure you’ll agree that giving even just a few pounds to promote this charity is a worthwhile cause. I look forward to your words of support in the coming months and even seeing you on the day! And yes, I’m more nervous about this than I was before Total Wipeout, The One Show and moving to America put together![/p] [p]Best wishes, Charlie (A.K.A: woodseee / Chest Hair Charlie) Xxx[/p] [p]For Total Wipeout humiliation, see 07:40 of http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rcotWZPMIXI[/p] [p]For One Show Mass Wax Off for Comic Relief humiliation, see http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s53-Ot1thJs [/p] [p]or 10:30 of http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hGPRI7bQLow[/p]
