Team story

[p]2020 was not an easy year for anyone; however, for me there was some additional stress as I was diagnosed with breast cancer. On March the 23rd, the day that the UK went into a national lockdown due to the Covid-19 pandemic; I went alone into hospital to have lifesaving surgery of a single mastectomy and full lymph node clearance on my left side. My husband stayed home with our two young daughters, as no friends or family could help with childcare due to the pandemic.[/p][p]During the following months of lockdown in 2020, I endured 18 weeks of aggressive chemotherapy and then radiotherapy. I also discovered that my cancer was genetic, meaning that my two young daughters and my siblings (all 12 of them!!) have a 50% chance of inheriting this gene and putting them at a significantly increased risk of a cancer diagnosis. As well as myself at further risk of other breast and ovarian cancers.[/p][p]Throughout all my cancer experience, I was forever grateful that it was me that had to battle this diagnosis, rather than my children. Seeing any child go through this horrible disease and watch their bodies and minds fight against it; I struggle to comprehend as a parent.[/p][p]That is why I have chosen to take on an extremely difficult physical endurance event to raise money for the charities Children with Cancer UK and Cancer Research UK. Through funding vital specialist research, these charities are doing everything in their power to give individuals the best chance to survive.[/p][p]I have just had (April 2021) further preventative surgery of a mastectomy on the right side and the removal of my ovaries and fallopian tubes. Then it is the anxious waiting game of hoping and praying that a reoccurrence does not happen. As well as learning to live with the ripple effect of the gene impact on my family and the day-to-day symptoms of early onset menopause, which the treatment has caused. At age 38 I was not quite anticipating this knock-on effect of dealing with the menopause, with more extreme side effects due to my age and the unnatural early onset of it. Personally, understanding and dealing with the menopause after everything else I have been through over the last 18 months has been one of the hardest parts of this entire journey.[/p][p]Training for a 105-mile multi discipline endurance event in Scotland over two days will certainly be a challenge. Especially whilst recovering from 2 major surgeries and working my way through menopause symptoms –but then I do not like to make life easy for myself and if I just tell myself that if I can survive chemo and lockdown surely this will be ‘easy’ in comparison?! [/p][p]I have corralled the support of trusted friends, mad enough to embark upon this journey with me and hold my hand across that finish line. Nothing is accomplished alone and together we will train for and then either endure or maybe even enjoy this challenging event for a very worthy cause.[/p][p]Thank you for helping to save the lives of people with cancer and keep families together.[/p][p]Through Virgin Money Giving, you can sponsor me, and donations will be quickly processed and passed to Cancer Research UK and Children with Cancer UK.[/p][p]Virgin Money Giving is a not-for-profit organisation and will claim gift aid on a charity's behalf where the donor is eligible for this.[/p][p]I really appreciate all your support and thank you for any donations.[/p][p] [/p][p][br][/p]
