My story

[p]If you're reading this, you probably know who I am. But just in case, "Helo, Jon dw i!". [/p][p]I'm the Head of Participation for Hijinx Theatre. Hijinx pioneer, produce and promote inclusive theatre. [/p][p]In 2012, I joined Odyssey as a participant. It's a small community group, who meet once every Monday in the Norwegian Church, Cardiff Bay. In 2015, I was lucky enough to take the helm of this group - a mantle, I hope I have done proud. [/p][vmgvideo class="ql-video" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen="true" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/VdIX_21UcdM?showinfo=0&rel=0&iv_load_policy=3"][/vmgvideo][p][br][/p][p]Together, in the past 4 years, we have produced four magical shows, which shone on the stage of Weston Studio, Wales Millennium Centre. As Odyssey, this band of merry misfits, some with learning disabilities and/or autism, some without, all unite to have fun, and create through creative play. We share the spotlight with young performers from local special schools, and more recently the process with University Students exploring their inclusive path. [/p][p]But this year something magical happens. [/p][p]Odyssey turns 20! [/p][p]Odyssey, launched by Gaynor Lougher and Richard Berry in 1999, has been home to those lucky enough to call themselves members. In fact, many of them call it a family. A chosen family who support and elevate each other to new heights, who develop as role models to other disabled peers, and who encourage each other to move forward. [/p][p]Like many families, sometimes people leave. This can be unexpected and sad, like George and Martin; or because someone feels they have grown and are ready to face new challenges, like Ian. However, the work produced by Odyssey comes from the need and will of the group at that moment; it is shaped by who and what is happening in the lives of it's members. But in every instance, it invites the audiences to follow a journey to explore. [/p][vmgvideo class="ql-video" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen="true" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/Lk0Pjl7VUsg?showinfo=0&rel=0&iv_load_policy=3"][/vmgvideo][p][br][/p][p]I am not a natural runner. However in the past three years, I've become aware of a need to improve my fitness level. With the odd running spurt here and there - often centered around an organised 10k - I've slowly started to enjoy the post run satisfaction. [/p][p]When Virgin Money Lounge Cardiff then offered Odyssey a place for the 2019 London Marathon in honor of the 20th anniversary celebrations, we were grateful for the place - but admittedly, extremely nervous. It was with excitement and fear that I accepted the place on behalf of these friends; and a desire to do them proud. [/p][p]I'm not a runner. I am determined. [/p][p]Odyssey relies heavily on the kindness and generosity of those who support the development of its members and the public. Please support these brilliant humans, young and old, to continue the joy they bring to each other, and the 800+ audiences of families they bring Christmas to every year. [/p]
