My story

[p]As many of you know, I am an insulin dependent diabetic who has taken the crazy decision to run in this year's marathon in London. I have been a diabetic for the past 25 years and it impacts every part of my life but I was lucky enough to only suffer as an adult. For children, the effect is much more acute and hence I am aiming to hit my target and raise the money for JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation) in order to help find a cure. We will never know the true causality for my diabetes but it came around the same time that our first son, Lewis lost his battle for life. He was being looked after in the Neonatal ward at Guy's and St Thomas' which came under the umbrella of the Evelina Children's Hospital. The work of the hospital is truly heroic and hence I am also raising money for the Evelina Children's Hospital. As you can imagine these two charities have a profound link with me and therefore I want to raise funds for both charities, in what I sincerely hope will be my one and only marathon. [/p][p]Some of you have kindly pointed out that I do not have the physique of the classic marathon runner! Thus my first aim is to make it around the course in one piece. My second aim is to start the race at least 15 kilos lighter than my current 103 kg and finish in under 4 hours and 30 minutes (at the age of 48 I hope you will agree that both are ambitious). My additional commitment is that I will personally match the target amount (£10,000) and donate that sum if I fail to exceed either of these targets. [/p][p]Please give generously to these causes and help me smash all three of my targets. [/p]
