My story

[p]In April of 2020, I will be joining the charity Walking With The Wounded and taking part in what the Discovery Channel calls ‘the toughest footrace on the planet’ the Marathon de Sables or MdS.[/p][p]The MdS sees competitors have to take on six marathons in six days across the scorching Sahara desert, covering over 250km, in temperatures rising to 50 degrees celcius. Day 4 is the feared ‘Double Day’ when competitors run non-stop for two marathons across the dunes. The rules require you to be self-sufficient, to carry with you on your back everything except water that you need to survive.[/p][p]It just so happens that this is Walking With The Wounded's 10 year anniversary, 10 years of supporting physically and mentally injured military personnel.[/p][p]As a former member of the military that served in the UK and overseas as both a Royal Engineer (RE) and as a Special Air Service (22 SAS) Trooper, I have been exposed to and treated some of our injured. I’m keen to continue to support our service personnel and was looking for a charity, Walking With The Wounded not only provide financial, moral and employment support but enable injured personnel to achieve things previously thought impossible. Individuals such as Duncan Slater who has completed the MdS once and is planning to complete it for a second time. Duncan became the first double amputee to compete this challange and is an inspiration. [/p][p]We are only now becoming aware of some of the benefits of positive mental health, post traumatic growth and getting into the outdoors. In my spare time I run a group that takes serving and former military, police and fire service personnel out into the hills to get fit, share stories and simply engage with likeminded individuals. It’s inspiring to see what a difference this makes to them and to me. [/p][p]As the military conflicts come to an end, the need remains so, please show your support by donating to this great cause. [/p]
