My story

[p]As some of you may know, our son Sebastian started suffering from seizures at the age of five months old. These were initially 'floppy' seizures where he lost all control of his body for 2-3 minutes at a time before recovering and then these progressed to full blown 'tonic clonic' seizures. The latter ones were particularly upsetting and involved us having to call an ambulance on several occasions and also spend a significant amount of time in hospital having tests and trying to stabilise his condition. At its worst Sebastian was having 3-4 full seizures a day. These seizures were not only very visually upsetting at the time because Sebastian's eyes rolled back and he struggled to breathe and went blue, but also left him upset, angry and tired for the rest of the day and then unable to sleep at night. This meant we were constantly on high alert, very worried about how to stop them and the impact they may be having on his development and also unable to sleep at night as we were caring for him.[/p][p]After several months of tests and different medications Sebastian has now not had a seizure for 6 weeks and we are hopeful things will stay this way. However we are well aware that they probably will come back at some point and that his medication needs to be closely monitored to try and manage them moving forwards. We are also unaware of the longer-term effects the medication may have on Sebastian. Before Sebastian started having these seizures we knew very little about epilepsy. After living through the experience of looking after a child with seizures for just a few months I cannot over emphasise the impact they have both on the child and their carers and everything else that used to be important in life quickly fades into the background.[/p][p]Fingers crossed that we have been lucky and are now able to manage these seizures , but some families impacted by epilepsy are not so fortunate and have to live with their children having multiple seizures a day as part of their way of life. Therefore I am raising money for The Daisy Garland charity because they seek to raise aware and support families impacted by their children having epilepsy and also provide equipment to give them help and reassurance. This equipment helps monitor night-time seizures and has saved lives. They also offer grants for these families who are unable to mange their children's seizures despite them taking medication, and fund research into ways in which these can be reduced.[/p][p]I've run a marathon before but this one feels different as the topic and charity are particularly close to my heart and I know how helpless it can feel to watch your child suffer in this way. This is what is going to inspire me during my training. As I have a guaranteed place in the marathon I do not mind how much money I raise, my main aim is to raise awareness and support for Daisy Garland and increase awareness around childhood epilepsy and any donations, however small, would be welcome. Thank You x[/p]
