My story

[p]A Cerebrospinal Fluid (CSF) leak is a serious and often incapacitating medical condition stemming from a tear or hole in the membrane that contains the fluid surrounding the spinal cord and brain. It can occur in the head or spine as result of trauma, surgery, an underlying disorder, or spontaneously.[/p][p]When fluid leaks out, pressure and fluid volume around the brain reduces (known as intracranial hypotension) which allows the brain to sag within the skull. As a result of this ‘brain sag’, sufferers often experience severe and unrelenting head pain, visual disturbances, hearing impairment, seizures and a wide range of other symptoms.[/p][p]My husband Russell spent several years with an undiagnosed CSF Leak. In late 2018, he became severely unwell, and developed frontotemporal dementia. He was sleeping 18 hours a day, battling bad headaches, falling, choking, and losing his sense of smell and taste.[/p][p]Luckily we were able to find a neurosurgeon who was able to successfully find and then repair his spinal leak. Since his recovery, we have both volunteered to support the CSF Leak Association, a registered charity working to raise awareness of CSF leaks, among patients, doctors and nurses.[/p][p]In April 2020, I will be proudly running the London Marathon to raise funds for the CSF Leak Association, so that they can continue to do fine work for sufferers, their carers and the broader medical community. Please consider donating to this very worthy cause. Russ and I and the CSF Leak community truly appreciate your generosity. [/p]
