My story

[p]***NEWSFLASH!***[/p][p]My best old school pal, Ali Morris (nee Rand), has awesomely committed to complete the challenge with me at the end of June! So we are now progressing with a joint fundraising effort for AMEND. While she'll be fresh from marathon training, my pace will hold her back keeping her walking for hours longer... and no doubt she'll have to push me up the occasional hillock... or mountain perhaps. She'll also have to share a tent with me and my smelly socks :-D[/p][p]Thank you so much for the generosity of donations already made. Training is in progress![/p][p]Crystal's story... [/p][p]2 years ago I was under the knife. My surgeon had an ‘interesting’ but thankfully successful day in the office. He managed to remove a Paraganglioma (rare neuroendocrine tumour), the size of a small egg, from my skull base. It had likely been there, growing slowly, for a number of years. It was tangled in with cranial nerves and arteries. I came out unable to swallow, with a paralysed vocal cord and various other nerve damage issues… but the tumour was out. A couple of days later I manged to get a bit of a swallow – 90 seconds for half a teaspoon from the hospital’s pureed food menu. I’m very thankful that life is now, for the most part, back to normal. What I call my ‘new normal’.[/p][p]During my diagnosis, I was given a different name for the tumour (even less commonly used). Of course, I’m straight on to Dr Google, only to find the only research documents were about dogs. Rare disease can be a lonely place.[/p][p]I have really had to be my own advocate for the right tests, scans, and follow-up. It’s no discredit to any of the professionals that dealt with me. When you’re dealing with a once-in-career occurrence, research in its infancy and unestablished protocols, it's understandable why answers don’t come flooding in. But it shouldn’t have to be as hard as I found it to find the right support.[/p][p]A while after my surgery, I came across a small charity called AMEND. And how I wish I had come across them sooner! I attended their annual conference, last year, and for the first time met people who had faced the same challenges. AMEND have resources and support that would have helped guide me through the tricky times and they will continue to help me into the future.[/p][p]I am very keen to support AMEND so that others may not have to feel so isolated and are able to advocate for themselves in times that are already tough. To do this, I’ve signed up to the Yorkshire 3 Peaks challenge to raise a bit of cash. This will involve climbing the 3 highest peaks in Yorkshire over 24 miles at the end of June. Once upon a time it would have been a thoroughly enjoyable experience. But now with a severed vagus nerve and fitness levels which have plummeted, it’s going to be bit of a challenge for me. Let’s hope I make it! [/p][p]Thanks for any amount of support you are able to give. Truly appreciated. And if you fancy joining me… amazing![/p][p]More info on AMEND, and the event, can be found at their website: https://www.amend.org.uk/[/p]
