My story

[p]Most of you are aware that I've been running for a few years now but have always been nervous about running a full marathon – well I've finally bitten the bullet and am running the London Marathon in April. I would love to raise some money for a good cause, any donations big or small will be greatly appreciated and a serious motivation for cracking out the long runs now that the cold weather has finally set in![/p][p]I have chosen to raise money for the Campaign Against Living Miserably (CALM), a national charity dedicated to preventing male suicide in the UK.[/p][p]What does CALM do?[/p][p]CALM’s helpline and webchat gives anyone the chance to offload and talk through problems. The professional helpline staff offer support, information and help finding specialist services.[/p][p]CALM challenges a culture that insists that a man who seeks support is somehow less of a man. We need to raise awareness of the issue so that everyone knows suicide is the single biggest cause of death of men under 45. We need to show that being silent isn’t being strong and push for change to improve suicide prevention policies and practices.[/p][p][br][/p][p]75% of suicides are male[/p][p][br][/p][p]On thecalmzone.net you’ll find men talking about issues they face – it’s a place to find out more about how to overcome some of these problems, along with articles, videos and sketches on masculinity which range from the crass and comedic to stuff on music, sports, work and psychology. We also publish an award-winning magazine for young men, the CALMzine, available in Topman stores across the UK.[/p][p][br][/p][p]What your money can do![/p][p]£7 can pay for one call that could save a life[/p][p]£23 pays for someone to take calls for an hour[/p][p]£80 pays for our website for a day[/p][p]£160 keeps one phone line open from 5pm to midnight one evening[/p][p]£1200 runs our entire helpline for an evening, allowing us to take nearly 200 calls a night[/p][p]£4000 can fund an entire issue of the CALMzine[/p]
