Team story

[p][img][/img]We are raising funds to support our 3 charities by swimming the Dál Riata North Channel from Mull of Kintyre Scotland to Northern Ireland. [/p][p]Latest news 25-07-18, on 22-07-18 we the One day wonders swim team have become the fastest swimmers ever to cross the North Channel in 6 hours and 31 minutes. [/p][p]Thanks for all your donations, based on our world record & good story, we are exploring further opportunites to raise funds for our 3 charities. [/p][p] Further information please contact us details at the foot of this page or on our facebook page: [/p][p]https://www.facebook.com/DalRiataChannelSwim/ [/p][p][img][/img][/p][p][img][/img][/p][p]Dál Riata Channel swim Sponsorship.[/p][p]All swimming, accommodation and travel costs are covered by swimmers Danny Hanlon, Bernie Stone, James Brent & Will Collings Wells, however, we are looking for sponsorship to support our 3 combined charities : [/p][p]• ACT Alchemy Charitable Trust http://alchemyct.org/ [/p][p]• Demelza Hospice Care https://www.demelza.org.uk/ [/p][p]• Royal National Lifeboat Institution https://rnli.org/ [/p][p]We intend to broadcast/stream the swim to many interested channels including worldwide masters & swimming media sites, promoting our sponsors and charities.[/p][p]Swim summary.[/p][p]The 4 swimmers in July 2018, will be attempting to swim in a relay, (where each person swims one hour in rotation), the *Dál Riata Channel from Mull of Kintyre Scotland to Northern Ireland. The distance in a straight line is 17k but will be significantly more with currents. *Dál Riata was a Gaelic kingdom that included parts of Western Scotland & North eastern Ireland on each side of the North Channel. At its height in the late 6th to early 7th centuries, it encompassed roughly what is now Argyll in Scotland and part of County Antrim in the Irish province of Ulster.[/p][p]If luck is on our side we hope to get over in 10-12 hours, if not we could end up elsewhere. The swimmers have all swum big open water swims before without wetsuits as solo and relay but not in a sea temperature of 13c, so we intend to wear wetsuits (to also try and reduce chances of lion’s mane jelly fish stings) this time around. [/p][p]We have a huge respect for it is believed the only 4 swimmers/teams before us who have competed this Dál Riata channel without wetsuits. The first attempt was by British Brighton born Professional swimmer Mercedes Gleitze (Carey) in 1928. Infinity Channel Swimming http://infinitychannelswimming.com/ who are piloting us over the channel say ‘The tide on this swim is fast so the team needs to swim 3.5KMPH + to have a chance to make it. We start swimming with the tide and have clocked a swimmer at **10.7Kmph with the help of the tide. But this will also stance you at some stage’. **To translate with the tide/current this is double the speed of an Olympic 10k swimmer! [/p][p][br][/p][p]Sponsorship & Charities:[/p][p]ACT Alchemy Charitable Trust[/p][p]Has now helped over 530 West Kent* and Sussex residents in desperate need and given grants totalling more than a quarter of a million pounds. We have all encountered times in our lives when we have faced unexpected financial demands, pressure or hardship when, no matter how hard we have tried, worked or saved, we simply cannot find the funds or help needed to resolve the problem. For some, family or friends, the State or other charities are able to provide the necessary support but for others their needs fall outside the usual parameters for State or charitable assistance and there appears to be nowhere else to turn. It is to help these families and individuals, already doing everything they can for themselves that ACT has been founded. *West Kent includes the boroughs of Tunbridge Wells District Council, Tonbridge and Malling District Council and Sevenoaks Borough Council only. [/p][p]Demelza Hospice Care[/p][p]Helping those who may not live a long life, to live a full life. Demelza provides the best care and support for seriously ill babies, children, young people and their families, across East Sussex, Kent and South East London.
