My story

[p]Myself and three other young people from across Kent were selected in April 2019 to join a team of 10 Scouts going to Antarctica. We will learn and help crew a 100 year old tall ship on a journey similar to Shackleton’s last expedition, the Quest, that took place in 1921. In December 2021 we will be commemorating 100 years since the voyage and the two Scouts selected to go with them. As a team we will be undertaking research on Krill (TASK), similar to James Marr's project in 1921, alongside our own individual research projects.[/p][p]I am a Scout leader from 1st St Lawrence Scout Group and an Aerospace Engineering Student. My research project involves using the arts to convey the overwhelming effects of human activity and climate change on Antarctica's landscape and wildlife. As part of the project, I would like to exhibit/show my work after the expedition to Scout groups, other community groups and schools and talk about the issues facing polar regions. I will also talk about my experience as a whole, sharing information on opportunities available to young people to find out more about different cultures and environments.[/p][p]Having studied both GCSE and A level Geography, I know that glaciated and cold regions are covered in the curriculum and I hope that by talking to students I can convey the information in a new way.[/p][p]As part of the expedition, I will be working towards my Scout of the World Award. This is an internationally recognisable award presented to individuals within Scouting who have organised and carried out their own projects to help better our world, whether this is supporting or introducing social or environmental initiatives, that might better the lives of people, animals or the planet as a whole. I hope my individual research can be used in the long term to help educate young people.[/p][p]Our patrons for the expedition are Felicity Aston MBE – The first woman to ski across Antarctica. The Hon. Alexandra Shackleton – Sir Ernest Shackleton’s grand-daughter and James Ketchell, who rowed the Atlantic, summited Mount Everest and cycled around the world.[/p][p]We have been tasked to individually fundraise £5000 which contributes to the £85,000 total for the entire trip. As part of my own local fundraising, I am contacting organisations and companies for financial sponsorship. Alongside organising multiple activities which you can keep updated via the Kent Scouts ReQuest 2021 Facebook page.[/p][p]As a team we are putting together ‘Antarctica in an Ice box’, which is for Scout groups and other youth organisations to learn about Antarctica through activities and once finished, groups can purchase the £2 badges to confirm they have done an activity for each of the 4 learning sections.[/p][p]To find out more about what is going on or to purchase some badges, get in touch via email dacholmes@gmail.com[/p][p][br][/p][p][br][/p][p][br][/p]
