My story

[p]UPDATE August 2020: So the plan now is to do 26.2 miles from home on Sunday 4th October 2020 as part of the virtual London Marathon. I have then opted to take part in the 2022 event in London. I've chosen 2022 because it will happen in April so training through winter will be easier than through the summer, and hopefully there is a better chance of it actually happening with a full crowd as well! So it looks like I'm doing two marathons now! [/p][p][br][/p][p]UPDATE April 2020: The new marathon date means I will be running on my 40th birthday weekend 🎂🍾[/p][p][br][/p][p] I will be running / walking / crawling the London Marathon to raise money for two charities:[/p][p][br][/p][p]MOORVISION[/p][p]Our son, who is now 8, was born visually impaired with ocular albinism, a condition where the eyes lack melanin pigment. He also has a nystagmus (involuntary back-and-forth movement of the eyes), sensitivity to light, difficulty seeing in school and doing some sports. He struggles to find his friends in the playground and is unlikely to be able to drive when he is older.[/p][p]Moorvision is a local charity who offer support to visually impaired children and their families. We have had valuable support from them for the last few years and been able to take part in activities we couldn't normally do.[/p][p][br][/p][p]DYSTONIA UK[/p][p]12 months ago I had never heard of dystonia. But then I started work in a new school and now teach a girl who is the same age as my son who suffers from the condition. [/p][p]Dystonia causes muscles to contract and twist uncontrollably and causes her great pain every day. The most difficult thing is seeing her pain and not really knowing what to do to help her. This seems to be common with all dystonia sufferers with trial, error and change being the only way to try and manage it.[/p][p]Running the marathon won't cure her or my son, but it will help raise awareness and allow other children and families to gain much needed support.[/p]
