My story

[p]I’m running my first (virtual) marathon in October 2021 to raise money and awareness for Action on Postpartum Psychosis.[/p][p]In 2017 our world was changed when we became parents. Not long after we welcomed our son to the world, my wife, Esther developed a rare condition called Postpartum Psychosis. [/p][p]It is a severe episode of mental illness which begins suddenly in the days or weeks after having a baby. Symptoms vary and can change rapidly. They can include high mood (mania), depression, confusion, hallucinations and delusions. Postpartum psychosis is a psychiatric emergency.[/p][p]We’d never even heard about this mental illness that affects 1 in 1000 new mothers! We’d only ever heard about postnatal depression - which is why it caught us both out of the blue![/p][p][br][/p][p]Thankfully with the professional support from the local NHS Perinatal Team, Esther recovered. It was a long healing process but she did eventually recover.[/p][p][br][/p][p]Because we had no idea about this mental illness, I want to raise awareness of Postpartum Psychosis and APP which specifically supports new mothers (and their partners) with the condition. Even if this fundraiser only educates 1 person about the condition, that will make every mile that I run worth it![/p][p]The aims of APP are:[/p][p]To provide up to date information to women who have experienced PP and their families[/p][p]To facilitate a peer support network for women and their families[/p][p]To increase awareness of PP - its symptoms, management and impact - among health professionals and the general public[/p][p]To advocate for improved services for women and their families[/p][p]To facilitate research into all aspects of PP[/p][p][br][/p][p]Find out more about APP here:[/p][p]https://www.app-network.org[/p][p][br][/p][p][br][/p]
