My story

[p]My life was ticking over nicely until 17th May 2008. This is a day I will never forget. Paradoxically it is a day I will never remember. It is the day my brain exploded. I got as near to death as you can get without actually dying. I suffered a huge aneurysm and sub-arachnoid haemorrhage leading to a stroke, plus complications including hydrocephalus, meningitis and epilepsy. I spent 3½ months in a coma, and but for the brilliant team at The Wessex Neurological Centre (WNC) I would be dead. [/p][p]Since they saved my life, I have raised money for the WNC’s Smile4Wessex Appeal, which funds state-of-the-art equipment, facilities and research at the unit. Past fundraising has included completing a triathlon and having my hair and beard shaved off (not even my ex-wife had ever seen my chin!). My latest scheme for raising money is what I am calling the "Six Decade Challenge", (VI DC). On the 20th of March I will be 59 – and enter the last year of my 6th decade. The last ten years have been courtesy of the WNC so I do hope you can help me raise some much needed cash by sponsoring me to undertake this challenge of six ‘events’ over six weeks:[/p][p]1) 60 lengths swim at QE School, Monday May 21st[/p][p]2) 50 mile cycle – Monday May 28th,or later in week depending on weather[/p][p]3) 40 of my vegan 3oz Mk lV A nuttyburgers, Selling as a lunch with chips and salad at the pub in my village, Shapwick - between Wimborne and Blandford, (http://www.anchorshapwick.co.uk/ ), 40p per meal being donated to the WNC. From Monday June 4th[/p][p]4) 30 minutes stand up show billed as: [/p][p]“For one night only, your last chance to experience an evening with Dave Allen”. The village church, St Bartholomews, has just set up a "Friends of St Bartholomews" group to help raise funds for the upkeep of the building. They are struggling as CoE congregations are shrinking all the time. I will do this part of the challenge there which Dave Allen would have loved the idea of. (I will be donating that evening's money to the church fund). Due to my damaged right frontal lobe, see attachment, that makes me talk a lot, (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Witzelsucht), it will be a whole evening in two one hour parts for £5, with a free beer/wine at half time. Friday June 15th. For tickets, please call David on 01258 858675[/p][p]5) 20 mile walk. Monday June 18th,or later in week depending on weather[/p][p]6) 10,000 feet tandem parachute jump with The Red Devils at Old Sarum - Tuesday June 26th[/p][p]People who sponsor £10 or more can get a free copy of my e-book: "Bloke With a Stroke - The Hole Story", (life before, during and after my stroke), e-mailed to them, RRP £4.99.[/p][p]https://www.amazon.co.uk/Bloke-Stroke-David-Allen-ebook/dp/B00B4YM1BC/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1515192483&sr=8-1&keywords=bloke+with+a+stroke [/p]
