My story

[p]The Wild Wheelchairs Project: [/p][p]Create a Handcycle, Climb a Mountain and Build a Wheelchair Factory[/p][p]We have funded a team of masters students at the University of Southampton who have designed and built an off-road solar powered handcycle capable of allowing two amputees to ascend Ethiopia's highest mountain, Ras Dashen (4,550m).[/p][p]Alex Lewis (motivational speaker and quadruple amputee http://www.alex-lewis.co.uk) and Emebet Ale Dires (double amputee from Bahir Dar, Ethiopia) will be undertaking the challenge accompanied by a team of supporters.[/p][p]We are raising money to enable a wheelchair manufacturing facility to be built in Ethiopia and to support ongoing programmes to help the disabled in that region. We are working in association with the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation and Laureus partner the Cheshire Foundation - Action for Inclusion.[/p][p]By creating the manufacturing facility we are supporting the local community by offering an employment opportunity, creating awareness of disability and inspiring the young disabled community. The project will transform the lives of hundreds of people in Bahir Dar, Ethiopia.[/p][p]We also hope that the project will inspire people in the UK to achieve their goals irrespective of the obstacles that are put in front of them.[/p][p]The costs of the handcycle and the expedition have been met privately, so all the money raised will go directly to funding the wheelchair factory and Laureus charitable programmes.
