My story

[p]Hi all, [i]bonjour à tous ![/i][/p][p]Thank you for visiting this page, and for sponsoring my [span=color: #000080;][b]first ever marathon[/b][/span], for IWA. This was on 24 April 2016, and the photo proves I made it.* I was signed up for 2015, but had to pull out because of recurring hamstring injuries. The amount you kindly donated up to April 2015 totalled [span=color: #003366;][b]£1505[/b],[/span] and that is included in the total shown here as offline fundraising. [span=color: #003366;][b]Special thanks to off-line contributor David Stevenson, former IWA Chairman, former president of IWI and friend for 30 years! [/b][lt]span style="color: #000000;"[gt]And all last year's sponsors, my dearest Irène, sister Sheila, brother Pete, my uncle George and his stepdaughter Sara, Barbara Sheridan, schoolmate and narrow boat owner Tony Teague, Judith Blaiklock, IWI members Dennis Beer, Vicky Black, David Wadham and Charlie Helliwell, and others I'll name when they give me permission![/span][b][lt]br /[gt][/b][lt]/span[gt][/p][p]The funds donated are [span=color: #003366;][b]from 17 countries so far, on 4 continents![lt]br /[gt][/b][lt]span style="color: #000000;"[gt]UK, France, USA, Ireland, Canada, Sweden, India, the Netherlands, Belgium, Denmark, Serbia, Czechia[/span][lt]/span[gt][span=color: #000000;],[/span] Australia, Italy, Germany, New Zealand and Greece. The money will help the campaigning efforts of the [b][span=color: #003366;]Inland Waterways Association[/span][/b]. IWA is a registered charity, founded in 1946, that advocates the conservation, use, maintenance, restoration and development of all inland waterways for public benefit. More than 500 miles of canals and navigable rivers have been re-opened to public use since IWA was founded and there are plans to restore 500 more![/p][p]I am also promoting waterways worldwide through[span=color: #003366;] [b]Inland Waterways International[/b][/span], an association that was founded from IWA's international committee in the mid-1990s. That's why we are getting this fantastic support from all over the world.[/p][p]I became interested in inland waterways at 16, when I attended the London Boat Show and bought Stanford’s Canoeing Map of England and Wales. This sparked a desire to explore the hundreds of miles of waterways that were currently available. I became an IWA member in 1968, also becoming a volunteer and participating in Operation Ashton to help restore the derelict Ashton and Lower Peak Forest Canals. I moved to France in 1976 and have been involved in restoration of the rivers Lot and Baïse, and reopening of the Canal de Roubaix.[/p][p]Over the years I have acted as a researcher and a waterways consultant on many projects to help protect and restore the waterways. I am very proud to have been given the opportunity to raise money towards such a worthy cause.[/p][p]You can sponsor me through this page, and donations will go directly to IWA.[/p][p]You can also sponsor me through IWA's fundraising officer [b]Sarah Frayne[/b] by[/p][ul][li]Phone – Call 01494 783453 ext. 611[/li][/ul][ul][li]Post – Send a cheque payable to ‘The Inland Waterways Association’ to Sarah Frayne [b][span=color: #003366;]London Marathon[/span][/b], IWA Head Office, Island House, Moor Road, Chesham, HP5 1WA[/li][/ul][p]Thank you for your support![/p][p][span=font-family: 'Lucida Grande'; font-size: x-small;]Warm regards[/span][/p][p][span=font-family: 'Lucida Grande'; font-size: x-small;][i]Très cordialement à tous mes amis et contacts francophones ![/i][/span][/p][p][span=font-family: 'Lucida Grande'; font-size: x-small;]David[/span][/p][p][span=font-family: 'Lucida Grande'; font-size: x-small;]* Time was 4 hours 10 mins 57 secs, 93rd out of 245 in my age category[lt]br /[gt][/span][/p]
