My story

[p]This Friday, 26 March I’ll be ditching the comfort and warmth of my bed to sleep ‘rough’ for the night, to raise awareness of the thousands of young people who are made homeless each year.[/p][p]The Sleep Easy event is run by the YMCA, who help young people rebuild their lives, and my aim is to raise some money to help support the amazing work they do.[/p][p]My kids think I’m daft, but the questions they’ve asked already as to why I’m sleeping outside with little shelter (on my birthday!), is proof enough to me that the event hits its objective target square in the face to raise awareness of the many people forced to sleep rough every night. [/p][p]There is no national figure for how many people are homeless across the UK but estimates put the figure well over 200,000. [/p][p]So, for one night only I’ll be building a crude shelter from bits of cardboard, in an attempt to stave off the predicted near freezing temperatures and experiencing just a tiny bit of what so many endure every single night. [/p][p]Please, think about how comfortable your life is, and consider, for just one evening if you could perhaps forgo your usual Friday night take-away, and instead donate the money to this worthwhile cause, to help some people who are less fortunate. Every penny you give counts, and will be greatly received.[/p][p]Thank you for your support.[/p][p]David[/p][p]What is Sleep Easy?[/p][p]The aim is simple: spend a night challenging yourself to sleep rough, raising money to help change the lives of local people across London and beyond. [/p][p]Although we can’t all be together this year, we are hoping you will still join us virtually by choosing your own unusual place to spend one night sleeping rough. This could be your garden, garage or even your sofa however you can challenge yourself to spend one uncomfortable night to raise vital funds so many others don’t have to sleep rough.[/p][p]Where do the funds go?[/p][p]YMCA St Paul's Group is the largest YMCA in Europe and one of the largest providers of supported housing in London and beyond providing a safe place to stay for around 1,200 residents each night.[/p][p]As well as accommodation, care homes, education and training, the Charity is focused on the transformation of communities through its Health and Wellbeing Centres, children, youth and family programmes including nurseries, after school clubs and soft play centres. Our work spreads across West, East, South West, South London and into parts of Surrey and Berks (Slough).[/p]
