My story

[p]I'm cycling the Ride London 100 mile cycle ride to raise funds for LAM Action. Just to add to the already difficult challenge I’m aiming to finish the ride in under 5hrs 30mins. [/p][p]I was asked to take part by Matt a friend of mine from university to raise money for LAM Action, a charity that Matt has supported in the last few years by running a number of marathons and half marathons. In 2010 Matt's wife Sarah had become very ill and was diagnosed with a cyst on her lungs and a 9cm tumour on her kidney which required the removal of her kidney. Sarah was subsequently diagnosed with Lymphangioleiomyomatosis (LAM). LAM is a very rare lung disease that occurs almost exclusively in women and is generally diagnosed in women of childbearing age, there are around 240 women known to have LAM in the UK. LAM mainly affects the lungs, where an abnormal type of cell (called a LAM cell) builds up leading to cysts being formed, it also causes tumours on the kidneys. As the LAM cells build up and lung cysts form there is a deterioration in lung function, but the rate at which this occurs varies between patients. A few women still have moderately well preserved lung function 20 years after being diagnosed with LAM, whilst others are less fortunate and deteriorate quite rapidly and require supplemental oxygen with the most extreme cases requiring lung transplants. Women often go undiagnosed for years, and are frequently misdiagnosed with asthma, bronchitis or emphysema.[/p][p][br][/p][p]Unfortunately there is no cure for LAM as yet.[/p][p][br][/p][p]The money raised will be used by LAM Action to pursue research to find the cause of LAM, to carry out research to see which treatment is best, and follow through with treatment trials, to provide continued and better support for women with LAM. [/p][p][br][/p][p]It is often difficult for rare diseases such as LAM to get funding for research so please donate what you can to support this very worthy cause. [/p]
