My story

[p]My daughter, Maya, grew up with Liberty Schurer from infant school through primary school and, after a lot of hard work, into our local Grammar School. We have many fond memories of Liberty and Maya together as they continued to grow up. I especially recall when they did a school fashion show and got so excited about being on the catwalk.[/p][p]However, whilst Maya continues to grow and develop into a young women, Liberty's story has, sadly, finished prematurely. After a courageous thirteen month battle with cancer Liberty, passed away on October 11th 2017, just two weeks after celebrating her 14th birthday. She left a massive hole in her family's and friends' lives.[/p][p]Liberty was diagnosed with Ewing's Sarcoma in September 2016 on her 13th birthday. It is a rare and very aggressive form of bone cancer. Liberty was an absolute inspiration to us all, keeping her cheeky sense of humour and a constant smile on her face as she endured her gruelling treatment.[/p][p]Sadly just days from finishing treatment in August 2017, Liberty discovered a new lump and her parents received the news that everyone dreaded. Not only had the Ewing's returned, but devastatingly it had extensively spread throughout her lungs, her liver and her lymph glands. There was nothing more that could be done.[/p][p]But still she fought on with that fierce determination that she was so known for, opting for yet more chemotherapy to try and extend her life. But the cancer was just too aggressive, the tumour burden too great, her now tiny frame just too weak.[/p][p]It was during these last few weeks that the idea for Liberty's Legacy was born. Throughout the course of her illness Liberty's biggest frustration and indeed that of her parents was the total lack of funding and research into this deadly form of the disease. The protocol that she was treated with was decades old, designed for adults, and sadly survival rates for Ewing's have not improved in over 30 years. How could this be?[/p][p]Liberty's greatest wish was therefore that there be fundraising in her name, with all proceeds to go towards research into Ewing's, so that no other child need suffer in the same way and no other family be devastatingly ripped apart. Through Liberty's Legacy, Liberty's parents hope that her name will live on and allow them to bring Liberty into the future with them, and give honour and meaning to her life.[/p][p]This is the cause that I and, I hope through supporting this fundraising event, you will support. I will be completing the Glyderau Five Peaks Challenge on Saturday 7th September 2019. This is a gruelling ten to twelve hour hike up and down five of the tallest peaks in Wales covering a combined 15,767 feet up and back down. That is three miles up and down![/p][p][br][/p]
