My story

[p]To mark his 70th Birthday, former Lisnagarvey 1st XI Hockey captain and Lurgan Cricket Club Captain Denis Johnston, wants to do something positive to give thanks for reaching those three score years and ten. [/p][p]Two organisations which have meant a great deal to him over the years are Macmillan Cancer Support and the South American Mission Society Ireland (SAMS). [/p][p]His wife Hilary died from Cancer 23 years ago at the age of forty and Denis describes how important Jenny the Macmillan nurse was to both of them during Hilary's last year of life. More recently his younger brother Alan an Irish cricket international and his close friend Archdeacon Philip Patterson also passed away to that same disease and he wants to remember them at this time. Therefore he wants to raise funds for Macmillan Cancer Care.[/p][p]His involvement with SAMS and mission in South America goes back over forty years. He was General Secretary for twenty four of those years and visited most countries in South America. His home church Shankill Parish, Lurgan was also closely involved with SAMS. A current priority project is the provision of a toilet block , kitchen facilities and a shelter for the indigenous community in Paraguay and this is what the funds for SAMS will go towards.[/p][p]Denis has been involved in sport most of his life and to this end he has decided to do a sponsored walk on Saturday the 19th June 2021 from Lisnagarvey’s ground in Hillsborough to Lurgan’s ground at Pollock park in Lurgan a total of 14 miles. (7+7 @70). He will be joined by his two sons Philip and Stephen, his late brother Alan's wife Moira and the late Philip Patterson's wife Eleanor. Other family members and friends will join in at intervals.[/p][p]Lurgan RF&CC ambassador and Ireland rugby international Jacob Stockdale says, “I am delighted to see Denis retaining his sporting links and congratulate him on marking his 70th birthday in this unique manner. I wish him well in this endeavour and trust you will support his chosen charities.” [/p][p]Route and approximate times Saturday 19th June:[/p][p]Leave Lisnagarvey Hockey Club, Hillsborough 8.45 - 9.00am[/p][p]Arrive Vic-Ryn through Culcavey 10.30 - 10.45 am[/p][p]Leave Vic-Ryn 11am[/p][p]Arrive Moira Church of Ireland Parish Centre 12.45 - 1pm[/p][p]Leave Moira 1.15pm[/p][p]Arrive Pollock Park, Lurgan 3.15 - 3.30pm[/p][p]The weather forecast looks good for Saturday [/p][p]Dry with sunny intervals 12-18 degrees centigrade.[/p][p][br][/p][p][br][/p][p][br][/p]
