My story

[p]On the 20th April 2019 Oliver Ainsworth and Matthew Hague, who both work in Strutt & Parker's Ipswich office will be competing in the Devizes to Westminster International Canoe & Kayak Race. The race is dubbed the toughest non-stop kayaking marathon in the world, it is 125 miles long and has 77 portages throughout the course. [/p][p]The first 52 miles are along the Kennet and Avon Canal to Reading, the next 55 miles are on the River Thames to Teddington and the final 17 miles are on the tidal Thames. The distance between portages equate to almost half a marathon in their own right, all with a Kayak in your hand.[/p][p]They will be racing straight through, which will mean paddling through the night over the Easter weekend with the aim to complete the race in time for a well deserved breakfast. They hope to complete the race between 24-26 hours. [/p][p]The paddling conditions are often one of the greatest hurdles to completing the event, especially during the night. Wind, snow, hail and rain commonly make an appearance at some point during the race, with little cover in an exposed boat.[/p][p]They will be competing in a 2 man marathon kayak (K2) which are very narrow and unstable, but all this helps it to cut through the water. They have spent the last 6 months training in the coldest of winter days and nights, breaking ice to get in the water and fending off aggressive swans during night paddling practices after work.[/p][p]Oliver and Matthew are hoping to raise £5,000 , with the final amount being split 50/50 between the Charlie Watkins Foundation (managed by Essex Community Foundation) and the Suffolk Community Foundation. [/p][p]The Charlie Watkins Foundation (https://www.cwfoundation.co.uk/) was set up in memory of Charlie Watkins after his untimely death in 2017 due to depression. Oliver and Charlie had been life long friends, the foundation was set up by Charlie's twin brother Harry to fight the stigma of mental health and aims to encourage vulnerable young people to talk whilst increasing the awareness of mental health issues. [/p][p]The Suffolk Community Foundation acts as a philanthropic hub in order to direct funds to a huge range of small local charities throughout Suffolk who are then able to concentrate on delivering for their beneficiaries, rather than constantly seeking to raise funds. The charitable works covers a huge range of services across education, health and wellbeing, children and families and support for local communities in need.[/p][p]A tracking app will be set up for the race itself for anybody who wishes to follow their progress across the course.[/p][p]All support is greatly appreciated and will not only be well received by the charities, but will also fuel the fire during those dark times of the race. [/p][p]Please feel free to share amongst family, friends and work colleagues. [/p]
