My story

[p]I can't believe it, but I just ran 10km! [/p][p]I have hated running all my life. Six months ago, I couldn’t run for 60 seconds. I achieved my first 5k at the end of July and in September I started an 8 week training plan to enable me to reach 10km so that I could run the Vitality London 10,000 and raise funds for Sue Ryder Manorlands hospice. This is why...[/p][p]My best friend's name is Jo. We met on our first day at uni almost 40 years ago. Her mum is called Audrey. She and my mum became friends.[/p][p]Audrey has been living with terminal bowel cancer for some time. Earlier this year, at the height of the pandemic, she had a poorly patch and was hospitalised. Her condition stabilised and she was due to go home when she tested positive for Covid-19. As Audrey was deemed end-of-life, there was minimal intervention and sadly she passed away soon after. [/p][p]I'm running to raise funds for Sue Ryder Manorlands hospice, who supported Audrey, Jo and her family whilst she was unwell. This horrible disease is particular life limiting and isolating, made worse by the fact that Audrey had no family living nearby. The help she received from the amazing staff at Manorlands was invaluable.[/p][p]It is Jo’s birthday during Virtual Vitality London 10,000. This will be my thank you for her unconditional friendship over the years, as well as a fitting tribute to Audrey.[/p][p]Last year Sue Ryder Nurses and Manorlands Hospice provided 105,000 hours of palliative care and support to patients and their families. The service they provide is free of charge, but it costs them nearly £3.5m per year, or over £9,500 per day to provide. Like many charities, their income stream has been severely negatively impacted by the pandemic which is even more significant as the effects of Long COVID increase the demand for palliative care. Please help me to support them. [/p][p]The final two photos are of Jo and Audrey at my wedding after party in 1991, and during the last holiday they had together in September 2019, visiting Morecambe where Jo and I lived in our second year at uni.[/p][p][img][/img][/p]
