My story

[p]Dear all, I am hoping to walk a lap of the paddock at Newbury Racecourse on Saturday the 22nd of September. This is a walk that I will try to complete without the use of my crutches after having being told I may never walk again. This will be a big challenge for me and I’m hoping to raise as much money as I can for two worthy charities: The Injured Jockeys Fund and the Nicholls Spinal Injury Foundation. [/p][p]On the 12th of April 2015, I was involved in a life changing accident. I was riding in a point to point when my horse fell at one of the fences and I suffered a kick to the neck. This broke and dislocated my neck and a fragment of the bone went into my spinal cord causing paralysis.[/p][p]I had no movement from the neck down and was flown to Plymouth hospital where I was put in traction for several hours, followed by a long operation to try to rebuild my neck. After 3 weeks of intensive care, I was flown to Oswestry Spinal Hospital where I was given expert care to try and gain as much movement back as possible and learn how to manage with a spinal cord injury. After 10 weeks of bed rest and several months of intensive physio, I started to regain some movement. I left hospital after 6 months managing to walk a few steps using a Zimmer frame. [/p][p]Straight from hospital and through the Injured Jockeys Fund, I went to Oaksey House where I lived for 4 months, receiving physio and strength and conditioning training. Gradually, with a lot of work and determination I managed to walk short distances with crutches. [/p][p]3 1/2 years later I’m still walking short distances with crutches but with increased training lately, I have managed to walk a little without crutches. This puts tremendous pressure on my legs and body and is very difficult to do but it’s still a big accomplishment.[/p][p]Recently whilst going back to Oaksey House for more treatment, I came up with a challenge to walk a lap of a racecourse paddock. Firstly, to give myself a goal and to put all this training to good use but also to try to promote the Injured Jockeys Fund and all the good work they have done to help me. [/p][p]Also, one day I would like there to be a cure for spinal cord injuries, so I’d like to support spinal research. As well as the IJF, I have also chosen to raise money for The Nicholls Spinal Injury Foundation, as they are a charity who fund research and development into curing spinal cord injury.[/p][p]Having a spinal cord injury changes your life. Not only with the difficulty to walk, but there are several other internal problems and challenges that you have to adapt and overcome. However, it’s not all doom and gloom, as I have managed to achieve lots of things since my injury. For example, I have managed to walk short distances without crutches, adapt to my injury, ride a pony, swim in a pool, drive a car, drive a tractor, swing a golf club and scuba dive![/p][p]Thanks for your support, Ed.
