My story

[p]On the 13th September 2018 our daughter Isla was born at St Thomas’s Hospital in London. As some of you will know, she gave us a bit of a scare during pregnancy with evidence of a rare heart condition that was picked up at 34 weeks. This meant that she had to be delivered in London rather than our local hospital in Hayward’s Heath because she would need specialist care once born. Once born she was transferred to the neonatal intensive care unit for monitoring where she spent 4 nights with the most amazing care from the doctors and nurses. We were very lucky that the neonatal ward was quiet and Sarah was able to stay on a ward for 3 nights and I stayed with family friends. On the 4th night we were told Sarah was to be discharged but Isla was not which caused a lot of upset especially as Sarah was trying to feed Isla every 2hrs and not being in the hospital would mean this was not possible. [/p][p][br][/p][p]This is when we heard of Ronald McDonald House and the amazing charity behind it. Operating alongside 12 NHS Hospitals they provide free and welcoming accommodation for families of children in hospital. Not all parents have the luxury of friends or family to call on for accommodation or can afford local hotels etc and Ronald McDonald House Charities believes that being close means parents can play an active role in their child’s care and recovery throughout their time in hospital. They can be involved in their child’s care and fulfil fundamental roles such as feeding their baby or supporting their child emotionally. They help over 6,000 families each year and the what they offer is invaluable.[/p][p][br][/p][p]We were lucky. The amazing nurses looking after Isla managed to find us a room for the 4th night as the plan was to discharge Isla the following day. If that had not been the case we would have certainly taken up the offer of accommodation from Ronald McDonald House Charities. [/p][p][br][/p][p]Because of the above I decided to enter into the Race to the Castle in June to raise some money for this great charity. I will be running 100km across the moors and up the coastline of Northumberland over 2 days, camping overnight between the 2 days. I have clocked over 540 training miles so far this year in preparation and with just over 6 weeks to go the reality of the task at hand is beginning to dawn on me![/p][p][br][/p][p]If you felt you were able to donate something to spur me on in my training and during the event itself and most importantly help support an amazing charity then it would be hugely appreciated.
