My story

[p]I have always wanted to do the London Marathon for as long as I can remember, so after signing up to do this in 2019, I had every hope of realizing my dream. Unfortunately I had an on going calf strain that prevented me from training the way I needed to for the distance and I was advised to defer to April 2020. Although devastated at the time to miss out on the 2019 Marathon, I knew it was the right decision as I was able to take my time to recover and build strength in my calf; so disappointment turned to excitement once again as I looked forward to April 2020. Then the world changed.......[/p][p]Postponing the London Marathon in April 2020 to October 4th, 2020 was the right thing to do for all concerned and I saw it as a way to continue to raise funds for Ability Bow.[/p][p]With the news that the October 2020 date is postponed again until next October 2021, I had mixed feelings. I so wanted to fulfil my dream of completing the London Marathon; but I was concerned about the Coronavirus and the mass gathering this would mean. In the end; I was relieved that a decision was made to put it off to next year and again; I see this as an opportunity to raise more funds for Ability Bow. Always as silver lining....[/p][p]The Virtual Marathon - On the day I was supposed to be doing the London Marathon; Sunday, October 4th 2020 I will now be doing a Countryside Walking Marathon along with some of my Nordic Walking clients! Starting at Ampthill Park we will walk a circular route to Luton through stunning countryside covering the 26.2 miles! Some of my clients are doing the whole distance with me, some are doing half so I am overwhelmed with their support! So fingers crossed all goes well, the Nordic Gods smile on us and that a great day is had by all![/p][p]UPDATE: I completed the Marathon on the rainiest day of the year which made it even more memorable and to have my friends come to meet us at the end was overwhelming! [/p][p]NEXT: The actual London Marathon on October 3rd, 2021 Training is going well so far and I'm looking forward to actually being in London for this event this year! [/p][p]UPDATE: Damaged my ankle in the Gym two weeks ago and know that running is off the table now, so I will just be walking the Marathon. I will be putting in a lot of miles on hard surfaces this next 4 weeks before the race but not going to worry about times now on the day, but just to enjoy the occasion! Still upbeat and excited as ever to be taking part. [/p][p]LAST UPDATE BEFORE THE DAY: My ankle has improved well though still swollen at the end of each days' walking. I managed a long 30K on hard surface that has boosted my confidence no end! This week I will be taking it easy but still doing some hard surface walking on top of my working walks with my groups in the countryside. I have had so much support from my family and friends and clients through this whole experience and it's very humbling. I am hopeful that I can complete the 26.2 miles next weekend and hope I do you all proud. During the past year I lost both my parents who used to love watching the Marathon with me growing up. I know they'll be with me every step of the way. [/p][p]Thank you so much for all the encouragement, it is so much appreciated. [/p][p]Who/What is Ability Bow?[/p][p]I wanted to do this challenge for a charity I could really get behind and believe in and Ability Bow ticked all the boxes. It's a small charity and based in East London where they help those with disabilities and debilitating conditions to undertake physical exercise on specially adapted equipment in some cases, all while encouraging social interaction. This in turn helps not just their fitness, but their confidence too. Well, that's what I love! [/p][p]Running my Nordic Walking business for the past 10 years I see every day the benefits of what being surrounded by supportive and positive people can do. Encouraging each other and listening is as much a benefit as the physical exercise. Ability Bow delivers all of this and much more.[/p][p]I want to thank all my friends and family for supporting me so far and hope to make you all proud on October 3rd for the London Marathon 2021. [/p][p]RESULT: I DID IT!!! After all the doubts because of injury, I was so thrilled to be there on the day and the experience is one I'll never forget. Thank you again to all my friends and family for sponsoring me and believing in me. Your support helped me through on the day and there is no doubt about it. Ability Bow have sent me an email and I spoke to them on the day about how much the donations mean and how many people can be helped, because of YOU. Thank so much. [/p][p]Many thanks,[/p][p]Elaine [/p][p][br][/p]
