My story

[p]In July 2012, my Grandad, Graham Hall, was diagnosed with Mesothelioma. This is a cancer that develops in the lining that covers the outer surface of some of the body's organs. It is usually linked to asbestos which my Grandad was around when he was working at the steelworks. It was awful seeing him go from playing golf everyday and taking us to buy sweets to sitting in hospital. In January 2013, he sadly passed away at the age of 64 after a short 6 month battle.[/p][p]In April 18, I watched the London Marathon. I told myself I would run a marathon in 2020. With no running experience at all, I slowly built up from 5km to 10km then to half marathon. After completing Bristol Half Marathon in September 2019, I entered Manchester Marathon. [/p][p]On the 5th April 2020, I will be taking on the Manchester Marathon, raising money for The June Hancock Mesothelioma Research Fund and Hasag Asbestos Disease Support. Due to current circumstances, I will now be running the Manchester Marathon in 2021.[/p][p]The June Hancock Mesothelioma Research Fund's main objective is to sponsor and promote vital research into the causes and treatment of mesothelioma. They also campaign to raise awareness of the disease and the dangers of asbestos and they support activities for people with mesothelioma and their carers.[/p][p]Hasag Asbestos Disease Support's main aim is to provide the help, support and advice they felt was sadly lacking in the area for people suffering from asbestos-related diseases and their families and to raise awareness of the dangers of asbestos. They help people across the whole of the South of England, including London and the Home Counties and fundraise and campaign for more research and better treatment and care for victims of asbestos.[/p][p]More than 2,600 people are diagnosed with the condition each year. Unfortunately, it is rarely possible to cure mesothelioma. That is why I want to raise as much money as possible to help support people going through what me and my family went through as well as trying to find a cure for this awful disease.[/p][p]All funds raised will be split equally between the two charities. If you would like to keep up with my training journey, I will be posting on my Instagram - @elise.fitprogress[/p]
