My story

[p]Hello,[/p][p]I’m Emily and on October 4th I will be running…ish the London Marathon to raise money for Meningitis Now.[/p][p]Meningitis Now is a charity close to my heart as at seven weeks old I was diagnosed with Bacterial Meningitis.[/p][p]The illness had gone undetected by doctors due to the lack of a rash. However, when my Mum noticed swelling on the soft spot on my head she knew I required urgent medical treatment and my Grandad drove me to hospital so fast that he blew his car exhaust![/p][p]Upon arriving at the hospital my family were told to prepare for the worst as my organs were failing and it was expected that I wouldn’t survive the night. I underwent a lumber puncture, received multiple antibiotics, and a priest came to christen me in the hospital.[/p][p]Against the odds I began responding to treatment and over the course of two weeks the amazing staff at Southport hospital worked relentlessly to save my life. Following my recovery, I was tested for brain damage, hearing impairments and limb damage, all common effects from this illness. Thankfully my only impairment was poor hearing – I was one of the lucky ones.[/p][p]Meningitis can affect people at any age, but the rates of infection is highest in children under five years of age, with most cases seen in babies. The rates of survival of Meningitis are very slim and the after-affects can be life changing.[/p][p]Meningitis Now invest in vital research into the prevention and treatment of this infection and in recent years there has been a decline in the number of cases due to their investment and commitment to beat this illness. However, there is a lot of work still to be done to create a future where Meningitis no longer effects so many lives.[/p][p]Now is my time to give something back - those who know me will know how big (monster!) of a challenge this marathon will be for me – I’ve decided to aim high in the hope that the money raised and awareness generated may save a life.[/p][p]I will be extremely grateful for any donation, no matter how small, to support this research and it will certainly spur me along to cross the finish line in October, god knows I will need it!![/p][p]Thank you for taking the time to read my story and your support.[/p][p]Emily[/p][p] x [/p]
