My story

[p]Hi, I'm lucky enough to be running the London Marathon this year as part of a group called the 'Bakers Dozen' - 13 ex-Great British Bake Off bakers who have donned their running shoes and are going to go through the pain barrier to complete the 26.2 miles.[/p][p]I rarely try and raise money for charity because I'll only do it if it's something really hard but because it's the London Marathon and because of the story below, I want to try and raise as much money for the Cystic Fibrosis Trust.[/p][p]Last year, I met a girl at a pop-up dinner. It was in a church hall and I was with my wife Karen and some friends, Matt & Vic. The girl next to me (as we were sat on benches) was in her early 20s and had an oxygen mask on her face with a tank next to her. We got talking and she told me she had cystic fibrosis which makes it really difficult to get enough oxygen into her bloodstream. She was fighting just to breathe. I told her that I'd raise money for whichever charity she wanted and she chose the Cystic Fibrosis Trust. This was in May 2017. We planned to get together after July summer holidays to plan some fundraising activities as she was quite into baking. On the day I was supposed to meet her, her Dad texted me that she was rushed into hospital and she'd contact me when she was recovered. I got another text a few days later telling me that she was being fitted with a mechanical lung which I understand is a last ditch measure and a dangerous procedure. I didn't hear anything for 6 months. I feared the worst and then in January 2018, I got a message from one of her friends telling me that she had a double lung & liver transplant in September and was still in intensive care.[/p][p]I don't know any more and I will not intrude in what must be such a difficult time for her family. I'm just going to run as hard as I can for a brave girl who is fighting for her life. It's not much but I hope in a small way it helps.[/p][p]UPDATE (5/3/2018) - Lucy-Anne Yeates is the name of the girl that I met at that dinner. Sadly, she passed away recently in early February through complications due to her Cystic Fibrosis. I went to the funeral and wake attended by hundreds of people. It was both sad and uplifting at the same time and I met Lucy-Anne's wonderful family - mother, father & sister. I am now running in her memory.[/p][p][br][/p][p]24 hour Relay Treadmill challenge - Thursday March 15th 2018 - UPDATE - EVERY RUNNER WILL GET A CAKE!![/p][p]One fundraising activity I'm going to do is to do a 24 hour relay treadmill run from 12pm on the 15th March to 12pm the next day. The University of Portsmouth have been kind enough to let me use their St.Pauls gym where the run will take place. [/p][p]I'm not going to do it by myself because I'd be dead! I'm looking for volunteers who want to take part and support this cause. I am trying to raise money for the Cystic Fibrosis Trust so I'm asking volunteers to either sponsor me or use this sponsorship page to get their friends & family to sponsor their relay run. Thank you![/p][p]The link below will take you to a spreadsheet where you can book yourself a slot on the relay treadmill run. Each slot is 10 minutes long so as many people as possible have the opportunity to take part. You can book yourself onto more than one. I'm guessing / hoping that lots of people will want to take part so can I ask you to limit yourself to 20 minutes for a daytime slot. For evening and nighttime slots, go for your life!!! I'm not keen on having to run for hours at 2am but I will if I have to!! Please support the graveyard shift![/p][p]This treadmill run is going to be publicised to my friends and family but also through the University of Portsmouth, BBC Radio Solent, Express FM and other channels. If you would like to take part, please email the following address requesting the slot or slots that you want. If I left it to self-booking, I wouldn't want to get into a situation where someone took someone else's slots. [/p][p]Email address to book running slots: enwezorlondonmarathon2018@gmail.com[/p][p]Spreadsheet where you can see available slots: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1RYDMKdODmRf28o-iCMX239-aNwZpk6ppWCWq6eTcebs/edit#gid=0[/p][p]If you don't want to run but want to help, I need helpers during the 24 hours to help coordinate all the runners. Any questions, thoughts, please email the address provided. I will try my best to be swift but places will go on a first come / first served basis. The run will be in Portsmouth at St.Pauls gym. I will provide full details closer to the time.[/p][p]If anyone wants to sponsor the event per mile, that would be awesome![/p][p]Thanks for all the support[/p][p]Enwezor 'I do like a pie' Nzegwu[/p][p]xxx[/p]
