My story

[p]A couple of years ago my friend Alisa invited me to an event for Big Change in London. It was held in a private apartment in Notting Hill. At the event I met 25 extra ordinary people, we each got to tell a story about our human journey. I realised that I was sitting among people who had lived life to the full, people who had embraced life with full vulnerability, tragedy, loss, joys, success and failiure. [/p][p]There were tragic stories, happy stories, scary stories told by all in the most open and unguarded way. The story that stood out was that of Karl Lokko. A black man from Brixton who turned a corner from gang leader to poet, social worker and Big Change campaigner. He had written a poem dedicated to the people who had helped turn his life around. [/p][p]We all have the ability to change and change the lives of others. When that happens, you empower not only yourself in ways unimaginable - you also inspire others to do the same. [/p][p]BIG CHANGE is a charity with a mission to: [/p][p]1. Give young people the skills to believe in themselves and drive change in their own lives and the world around them (for example Voice 21, an oracy curriculum that is helping young people to communicate better)[/p][p]2. Help young people access the opportunities they need to develop and grow (for example NCS’s opportunity hub, an online platform that will give 60% of teenagers in the UK access to employment and volunteering opportunities)[/p][p]3. Create environments of support for young people where change is possible – often that means understanding and working with key adults including parents, teachers, social worker or guardians (for example Frontline, a graduate children’s social work programme that is bringing new talent to the profession)[/p][p][br][/p][p]My Strive challenge is Leg 2 of the relay journey from Sardinia to the Summit of Mt Blanc... a 5 day hike across Corsica[/p][p][br][/p]
