Team story

[lt]p class="MsoNoSpacing" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;"[gt][lt]strong style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;"[gt][span=text-decoration: underline;][lt]span style="font-size: 14pt;"[gt]The Great Manchester Run 2013 - Fatty's Big Push - The Big Push 6![/span][lt]/span[gt][/b][/p][lt]p class="MsoNoSpacing" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;"[gt][span=font-size: 14pt;] [/span][/p][lt]p class="MsoNoSpacing" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;"[gt][span=font-size: 14pt;]In November 2007 I suffered a serious spinal-cord injury whilst swimming in the sea in Mexico. [lt]span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"[gt] [/span]I was left face down in the water with a broken neck, unable to move anything, and was drowned and unconscious when pulled onto the beach, where I was resuscitated. [span=mso-spacerun: yes;] [/span]I had been working as an airline pilot for Thomas Cook, having previously been in the RAF as a fighter pilot, and despite having been shot at a few times during the first Gulf War considered myself to be reasonably fit and healthy! [span=mso-spacerun: yes;] [/span]That all changed in a moment, and the next three months were spent on a life-support ventilator, first in Cancun, and then in Salford, tantalisingly close to the finishing line of the Great Run in Manchester![lt]/span[gt][/p][lt]p class="MsoNoSpacing" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;"[gt][span=font-size: 14pt;] [/span][/p][lt]p class="MsoNoSpacing" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;"[gt][span=font-size: 14pt;]Despite being in hospital for a total of 22 months, just six months after my accident I was allowed out to take part in the 2008 great run in my wheelchair, this was Fatty's Big Push! [lt]span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"[gt] [/span]Fatty is supposedly a term of endearment from my family! [span=mso-spacerun: yes;] [/span]Since then, my Big Push team of friends, colleagues and family have pushed me around the course, going more quickly each year, last year in an unbelievable record time of 48 min 8 secs, amazingly, 11 1/2 min quicker than when I was running! [span=mso-spacerun: yes;] [/span]How depressing, to be so much quicker sitting on my fat bum! The team must of course be completely mad, doing all the work, all I have to do is sit in my wheelchair![lt]/span[gt][/p][lt]p class="MsoNoSpacing" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;"[gt][span=font-size: 14pt;] [/span][/p][lt]p class="MsoNoSpacing" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;"[gt][span=font-size: 14pt;]In previous years the team have raised funds for many different charities, mostly those related to spinal-cord injury or children. [lt]span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"[gt] [/span]However, this year the team have decided to split our fundraising between two slightly different charities. [span=mso-spacerun: yes;] [/span]Fly2help (http://www.fly2help.org/) and The Joshua Tree (http://www.thejoshuatree.org.uk/Home.aspx) [lt]/span[gt][/p][lt]p class="MsoNoSpacing" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;"[gt][span=font-size: 14pt;]Fly2help amongst other things, provide flying experience for the disabled, disadvantaged, families who have suffered tragedy or trauma, chronic illness or abuse. [lt]span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"[gt] [/span]As many of the Big Push team have a flying background, we sometimes take for granted the fun, and freedom of being in the air.[lt]/span[gt][/p][lt]p class="MsoNoSpacing" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;"[gt][span=font-size: 14pt;]The Joshua Tree was established in Cheshire, by Josh's parents, to provide short breaks and support in the Cheshire countryside to families of children who have battled with cancer or other immune-suppressing illnesses. [lt]span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"[gt] [/span]Josh was diagnosed with leukaemia in 2004 when he was only 5 years old. [span=mso-spacerun: yes;] [/span]Now an active teenager, I had the pleasure of meeting him, and his family, when we were both involved with the Olympic torch relay last year, they really are a truly inspirational team.[lt]/span[gt][/p][lt]p class="MsoNoSpacing" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;"[gt][span=font-size: 14pt;] [/span][/p][lt]p class="MsoNoSpacing" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;"[gt][span=font-size: 14pt;]Please give generously, your donation however small or large really will make a difference. [lt]span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"[gt] [/span]If possible please also make sure that the sneaky Chancellor doesn't benefit from your donation by claiming gift aid. [span=mso-spacerun: yes;] [/span]Thank you for helping[lt]/span[gt][/p][lt]p class="MsoNoSpacing" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;"[gt][span=font-size: 14pt;] [/span][/p][lt]p class="MsoNoSpacing" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;"[gt][span=font-size: 14pt;]Jerry a.k.a.
