Team story

[p]This year's #Janurow charity challenge is to collectively row 11,180,113 m from Exeter to Phillippines. Sam and Shane have pledged to individually row 1 million metres of this throughout January. Here is the inspiration behind the idea and challenge:[/p][p]Sam: Since I stopped playing rugby a few years back, my life has very much changed. Along with my family, my main focus has become building a successful business. My training has become less specific and is now based on all round conditioning and remaining fit and healthy. But more recently I found myself searching for a new physical challenge to grab my attention...[/p][p]It needed to be one that was tough, but could realistically fit somewhere into a busy life. After seeing all the amazing feats individuals achieved for such events as Sport Relief and Comic Relief I had also found myself thinking about attempting it for charity. After a lot of thought I came up with the idea of rowing one million metres on the Concept 2 rowing machine throughout the month of January. That will equate to 32,258m, or just over 20 miles, per day everyday. Whilst I do a fair amount of rowing, that felt like a challenge, and also one that I felt was extreme enough to ask for sponsorship for. So #Janurow was born.[/p][p]Alongside me for every metre will be my close friend, and colleague at Fitness Matters, Shane Kingsland. He is super keen, although I am sure he won't thank me much a few weeks into our challenge!![/p][p]We are aiming to raise the profile of #Janurow sufficiently to make it a yearly event to involve many others and to benefit two fantastic charities. January is the perfect month for a physical challenge and there is huge emphasis on health and fitness following the festivities at Christmas. It will be a great way to burn off those extra pounds gained! [/p][p]Our chosen charities are both heavily involved with children (see link opposite) as that is a subject very close to my heart. One is based and run locally, and one is national. Please donate anything you feel you can towards our New Year's Rowsolution! Or if you would prefer to get involved yourself with the challenge, at any level, head across to the Janurow website for full details.[/p][p]Shane: New Year new challenge. After a hard year through dislocating my knee, I felt a new charity challenge needed to take place. Over the months of my recovery I maintained my level of fitness as much as possible, one of my methods was rowing with one leg on the Concept 2 indoor machine. I went on to achieve a single leg marathon, 42,195m, in just over 3 hours.[/p][p]Now, just short of 12 months on from my accident and back rowing with both legs it is time to hit something big! Along with Sam we have set ourselves a monster! 2 million metres throughout the month of January. 1 million each over the 31 days. Achieving 32,258m daily, just over 20 miles. Deciding to put ourselves through pain each day to raise money sounds like a good goal to me.[/p][p]The chosen charities are Dream-A-Way, which is a local charity for us. They support disabled and seriously ill people to be able to fulfill their dreams. And Plan-UK, where we are sponsoring children to help change the world one child at a time by transforming their lives. Wanting to support and and give something to young children and others was a no brainer for me. A child with a smile will be my motivation throughout this challenge. Please donate what you can to help and support others and give us a reason to row.[/p][p][/p][p]Many thanks and we will be in touch soon.... [/p][p][/p][p](Through Virgin Money Giving, you can sponsor us and donations will be quickly processed and passed to charities. Virgin Money Giving is a not for profit organisation and will claim gift aid on a charity's behalf where the donor is eligible for this. We really appreciate all your support and thank you for any donations.)[/p][p][/p][p][/p]

Late to the party boys but top work. I imagine that the planned overload of food and drink for when you finish is going to be as Epic as the distances that you have rowed. High fives all round, cheeky pat on the toosh and a jolly well done.
