My story

[p]As many of you know, Finn was born with part of his brain missing. He has, what the medics describe as, a “jagged profile”; some things he does well, others he struggles with. As his Mum, I prefer to describe Finn as both wonderful and unique.[/p][p]Life has chucked Finn an unfair disadvantage, but despite it all I am incredibly proud of the kind, loving, polite, funny, nurturing and caring 15 year old he is.[/p][p]But, let’s not beat about the bush, life for Finn is often tough. His quirks and uniqueness, sadly, make him too easy a target for bullies and he doesn’t learn in the way that our one-size fits all curriculum requires him to.[/p][p]I admire the abject resilience that means he heads to school with (mostly) a smile on his face, despite the fact that the experience is often an ordeal to be endured, rather a chance to learn and belong.[/p][p]Sadly, for children with challenges like Finn’s, it is an experience that is all too familiar. Countless families, like ours, face the private pain when the cumulative effect of processing their struggles becomes overwhelming. [/p][p]Despite this, Finn has hopes and dreams of getting a job, finding someone he loves to settle down with and raising a family. I cherish the normality he seeks, and together Finn and I are determined to find a way to bring his dreams to life. [/p][p]But he will need help.[/p][p]That was why I was so excited to learn about the charity: United Response. Established 45 years ago their vision is a society where everyone has equal access to the same rights and opportunities. They work for and with those with disabilities to help them live their lives to the fullest and achieve their potential.[/p][p]They are just the organisation whose help Finn (and all the other children like him) needs. [/p][p]Inspired by the work that United Response do, Finn and I have decided to embark on a joint fund raising challenge together. Not only will it raise money for this amazing charity, but hopefully it will give Finn a sense of achievement and the self-worth that his day-to-day experiences all too often knock out of him.[/p][p]So this is what we have agreed to do: I will run the London Marathon, dressed as a unicorn, and Finn (who is a committed non-runner) will run the equivalent distance by completing 8 (and a bit) parkruns. We will also be undertaking a number of other fundraising enterprises, designed to help Finn to develop skills that will help him when he leaves school. Our goal is to raise £1500, so anything you can do to support us will be appreciated.[/p][p]Watch this space for further news[/p][p]Thank you[/p][p]Frances & Finn[/p]
