[p]Liberty's Legacy are thrilled to be one of the chosen charities for the GX FunRun in May 2020, a 5km race on closed roads around Gerards Cross. [/p][p]As many of you will know, we sadly lost our daughter Liberty in October 2017 after she fought a courageous battle with Ewing's Sarcoma, a rare and very aggressive form of primary Bone Cancer. She had just celebrated her 14th birthday and our lives have been changed forever, she has left a gaping hole that cannot be filled.[/p][p]Throughout her treatment, Liberty was as an inspiration to so many with how bravely and valiantly she faced everything thrown at her, from gruelling chemotherapy, hair loss, chronic nausea and biopsies, to limb salvage surgeries, radiotherapy and a stem cell transplant. She refused to let this cruel disease define her and the smile for which she was so well known and wicked sense of humour rarely faded, despite everything she had to endure.[/p][p]When Libs discovered that the cancer had spread and that nothing further could be done, her greatest wish was to not be forgotten and for no other young person or family to suffer as she had and be ripped apart from their family in the same way. [/p][p]And so her idea for Liberty's Legacy was born and set up to raise awareness and vital funds for Ewings research in her name. Since February 1st 2018, Liberty's Legacy has been a special fund of the Bone Cancer Research Trust, with all monies raised ring-fenced specifically for research into Ewing's as per her wishes. [/p][p]Already the funds raised to date are starting to have an impact, with several exciting research projects well underway. But we know it's just the tip of the iceberg and every penny raised really does count and will make a difference, if we are to change the landscape for future children diagnosed with this brutal disease.[/p][p]Survival rates for Ewing's have not improved in nearly 40 years and the treatment protocol that Liberty received was not only designed for adults, but was decades old. Yet last year research funding for primary bone cancer from the larger cancer charities was at a 16 year low, representing just 0.04% of the overall research budget. With your help we urgently need to change this so that children like Liberty have a fighting chance - she had so much to offer and deserved so much more. [/p][p]For fourteen years, Libs was my best friend, my soul mate and the glue that held our family together, despite being the youngest member. She provided us with endless laughs with her oh so naughty, wicked sense of humour and her dazzling smile could truly light up the darkest of days.[/p][p]So on May 17th we will be donning our bright orange Bone Cancer Research Trust tops with pride and many of #TeamLibs will also be sporting butterfly wings in Lib's memory - from a very young age she was absolutely mad about butterflies![/p][p]The whole family want to say a HUGE thank you to all the runners who have agreed to join us and be part of #TeamLibs, we are genuinely so touched, it honestly means the world.[/p][p]Liberty Grace Schurer, you are so deeply missed, more that you will ever know and our hearts are forever broken. We love you to the moon and back, forever, and always will. I know you will be there by our sides on race day, supporting us just as you always have. We are determined to honour her Legacy and will keep on fighting and raising funds in her name...#UntilTheresACure[/p][p]Love forever, Mum, Dad, Liv & Bertiexx[/p][p]Thank you for reading and thank you for donating.[/p][p]To find out more about Liberty's Legacy, please follow us on Facebook @libertyslegacycharity[/p][p]Instagram @ Libertys_Legacy[/p][p]Twitter @libertyslegacy3[/p][p][br][/p]
