My story

[p]On Sunday 7th July - in under 2 weeks time - I'll be riding the 108 miles and climbing 5000m in the French Alps, in one of the toughest 1 day sportive's in the calendar - 'La Marmotte'. [/p][p]This is an event I first registered for in 2018. I had done months of training, had done well in some of the UK's toughest sportive's I completed in the build up, and was in the shape of my life - I was ready. However, this time last year a few weeks before the 2018 event we got the news that Sam's Leukaemia had relapsed, the trip was shelved. [/p][p]What followed was the toughest 12 months for the whole family. For Sam it was months in hospital, Chemotherapy, Radiotherapy, a Bone Marrow Transplant culminating in his sudden and tragic death almost 3 months ago on April the 4th 2019. [/p][p]In 2018 the organisers allowed me to defer my place to 2019 and shortly after Sam's death I decided to commit to the challenge and finish what I told Sam I would do. This year, with 2 weeks to go, I've managed 8 weeks of training. I haven't done any events, and am not as fit but with Sam's moral to 'never give up' ever present in my mind - I'm more determined than ever.[/p][p]It feels uncomfortable asking for sponsorship when so many of you have been so generous in your support over the past few years, but here I am! My Target is a poignant one - £1 for every day Sam was part of our lives.[/p][p]We miss you Sam and will never forget you. This ones for you buddy. x[/p][p]The Results[/p][p]After 8h19m of cycling, largely uphill, in temperatures up to 38°C, I finally completed Marmotte 2019.[/p][p]I crossed the line tired and emotional but proud of the achievement. [/p][p]Thank you to everyone for all the words of encouragement and support. I was able to smash my sponsorship target and Spread a Smile and GOSH have both been in touch and I'd like to pass on their thanks to you all for the overwhelming generosity.[/p][p]As demonstrated on Sunday, slowly but surely with persistence and determination I was able to inch forward and scale huge mountains. With the same persistence and determination and the money you so generously donated, hopefully the researchers in GOSH can themselves inch forward and hopefully scale their mountain - finding a breakthrough for Leukaemia.[/p][p]Thank you again![/p][p]Gareth, Jude and Rhys[/p]

Huge well done G for your epic mountain trek! Never give up, such a great motto and it is no wonder from where Sammy found his inner strength. He was with you all the way. Xxx
