My story

[p]In the hours before and during D-Day Royal Navy divers cleared 2500 mines and other obstructions from the approaches to the Normandy beaches whilst under fire, significantly reducing the risk to Allied sailors and soldiers. After the landings this dangerous work continued to clear the harbours of Europe to make them safe for ships resupplying the invasion force. On almost every day of every year since then Royal Navy divers and Mine Warfare personnel have disposed of bombs, mines and other live ordnance found underwater and ashore, in war and peace, in home waters and around the World. In addition to day to day work around the UK this has included Suez in the 1950s and 1970s; the Falklands in 1982; the Red Sea in1984; The Gulf; Iraq; Afghanistan (landlocked!); Libya. A recent local example was the safe removal and disposal of a WWII bomb from alongside the runway of London's City airport earlier this year.[/p][p]There is presently no memorial or statue to commemorate the people who have carried out this dangerous work and who continue to do so. Project Vernon plans to fix that by raising a statue in Gunwharf Quays, Portsmouth, the site of the old HMS VERNON where most of these navy personnel were first trained.[/p][p]My plan is to sail 2-handed around England and Southern Scotland via the Caledonia Canal over July, in the Dawn 39 yacht, "Pickle", with her Skipper, my good friend, Ian. The purpose of this is to increase awareness of this charity and attract funding through sponsorship. Please sponsor us generously. Thank you.[/p]
