My story

[p]What am I doing and why?[/p][p]This year I will be taking part in the Virgin Money London Marathon! I've been a casual runner for a number of years, but this is my first time taking on such a huge challenge. You can see just how far I will be running by watching the time-lapse video at the top of the page (it's a LONG way!).[/p][p]I will be running for Junction Arts who are a small charity based in Chesterfield. Click the 'Read More' button below to find out about their great work and the types of projects that your donations will fund. Any donation, big or small is hugely appreciated. [/p][p]Who are Junction Arts?[/p][vmgvideo class="ql-video" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen="true" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/K17hRkTQcRw?showinfo=0&rel=0&iv_load_policy=3"][/vmgvideo][p][br][/p][p]Junction Arts is a local charity who give communities facing social issues such as loneliness, poor health and low aspirations the chance to make a better future for themselves using the arts. The charity works with everyone across the community from school children and young carers to older people and those living in care homes who are isolated from their loved ones. Their festivals, workshops and events offer the chance for people to be creative, learn new skills and build stronger communities.[/p][p]Possibly best known for being the force behind the Bolsover Lantern Parade, this charity brings together an entire town to celebrate its community spirit. Each year new friendships are made and old ones rekindled as people come together to remember all that is good about their community and the people within it. [/p][p]This last year, when events were cancelled and distancing was enforced, the social issues our communities faced continued. Junction Arts worked harder than ever to reach the individuals, families and groups who needed the lifeline the creativity gives people. Big or small, your donations will make a huge difference to the individuals lives of our community:[/p][p]- £10 could give a young carer the opportunity to meet other people their age on a creative workshop [/p][p]- £25 could send a curiosity box to a class of school children to learn about their heritage [/p][p]- £50 could pay for an artist workshop with older people isolated in their homes [/p][p]- £100 could buy the materials needed for a full day lantern making workshop [/p][p]Who does their work benefit?[/p][p]Derek has discovered how the arts gives him the opportunity to keep busy and stay connected[/p][p]As Derek has gotten older, he admits that daily life has become more limiting and he's not able to get out and about as much as he used to. Derek knew he was at risk of feeling isolated and was looking for ways to get more involved with his community. By joining Creswell Gets Creative, a weekly arts group run by Junction Arts, Derek has discovered an accessible place where he learns new skills, has met new friends and has found a sense of belonging within his community. [/p][p]“It is difficult to feel close as a community as it grows and changes quickly. But this group gives us all a connection together.”[/p][p]Now Derek has new hobbies that he continues to develop at home and a wonderful support network who have all kept in touch throughout lockdown. “It’s always important to keep your hands and head busy!”[/p][p]Where can you find out more?[/p][p]www.junctionarts.co.uk, or @JunctionArtsUK on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram[/p]
