My story

[p]UPDATE 9th May 2018[/p][p]During 2017, I completed these 10 challenges…[/p][p]· A1EE Mount Leinster TAB, Feb. '17[/p][p]· Regents Park BHF 5km, Mar. '17[/p][p]· Great Ireland Run 10km, Apr. '17[/p][p]· ICHC 150ft Abseil, Apr. '17[/p][p]· El Juanar-Istan 18km Mountain Hike, July '17[/p][p]· A1EE SF Endurance 17.5km TAB, July '17[/p][p]· Dingle Half-marathon, Sept. '17[/p][p]· QUEST Achill Adventure Race, 31km, Sept. '17[/p][p]· Tough Mudder Obstacle Race, 10 miles, London South, Sept. '17[/p][p]· Construction Rocks, Scala London, Oct. '17[/p][p]And so far in 2018 I’ve finished the following…[/p][p]· Brixton 10km, January 2018[/p][p]· Richmond Park Half-marathon, February 2018[/p][p]· QUEST Kenmare 50km Adventure Race, March 2018[/p][p]· Great Ireland Run 10km, April 2018[/p][p]· BHF Tower of London 10k Run, May 2018[/p][p]At the end of this month of May, I’ll be attempting the Para’s 10 P-Coy Challenge, the Parachute Regiment’s 10-mile Loadbearing TAB cross-country race: https://paras10.com/pcoy-challenge.php[/p][p]Para’s 10 P-Coy Challenge[/p][p]Then swiftly onto the BIG ONE, the MASSIVE ONE, the CHALLENGE of CHALLENGES…Everything else has been building up to my attempt of this on 8th July 2018:[/p][p]AEE SF Endurance TAB Summer Fan Dance [/p][p]If you don’t know what the “Fan Dance” is…It’s a gruelling 24km Hike/Yomp/TAB over Pen Y Fan and Corn Du mountains, the two highest peaks in the Brecon Beacons. 12km up and over…then turn around…and 12km back again! All whilst carrying a rucksack weighing a minimum of 35lbs (15.9kg), with water and food bringing the total load-bearing to roughly 45-50 lbs (20-23 kg). This is the “civilianised” version of the legendary / infamous Fan Dance march, used by the SAS as part of the Selection process for the Regiment: the SAS Selection cut-off time is to complete the march in 4 hours or under: 4 hours will be my aspiration – Simply to finish in one piece will be my target! http://www.thefandancerace.com/Summer_2018.html#[/p][p]Training continues and dedication remains strong – Now for my final push on toward the Finish Line![/p][p]Please do make a donation (no matter how large or how small)![/p][p]_______________________________________________________________________________[/p][p][img][/img]Over the next 12 - 18 months I'll be undertaking a series of rigorous personal and physical challenges and events to raise funds for a number of charities.[/p][p]My selected charity for the UK is the Imperial College Healthcare Charity (ICHC) and more specifically the Hyper Acute Stroke Unit based in Charing Cross Hospital, London.[/p][p]I've a more than a passing personal interest in the great work the folks at the HASU do - Basically their fantastic and professional services successfully treated my father a number of years ago - and their hard work and dedication brought him to a place where full recovery from a series of debilitating strokes was possible. In other words, and not to put it too strongly, they saved my Dad's life.[/p][p]It's time to give something back to those fine people and their facility - and this is just my own small way of saying "thank you".[/p][p]Please support me on my journey - and make sure to donate in support of the HASU and the Imperial College Healthcare Charity.[/p][p]___________________________________________________________________[/p][p]Well, it *did* seem like a good idea at the time!![/p][p]So......what on earth is this #GoodIdeaAtTheTime malarkey all about?!?![/p][p]Here's what it is and what I'm going to do:[/p][p]Set some ridiculous goals and achieve them. Push myself to where I think my limits lie - and then grit my teeth and push through those limits. This won't be easy. It's not meant to be. That's the point.[/p][p]And, hey, whilst I do this thing – whilst I go on this journey – I'll try to help others: Raise funds and awareness for a number of charities close to my heart.[/p][p]So here we are, in January 2017, and after months of preparation and planning, this is the rough list (in roughly the correct order) of the challenges I have set for myself (gradually increasing in difficulty over the next 12-18 months), culminating in something that will either make or break me:[/p][p]- 5k Run[/p][p]- 10k Run[/p][p]- Sprint Triathlon[/p][p]- Abseil[/p][p]- Half Marathon[/p][p]- Parachute Jump[/p][p]- Olympic Triathlon[/p][p]- Adventure Race / Gaelforce-type Event[/p][p]- Tough Mudder[/p][p]- Spartan Race[/p][p]- The Pen Y Fan “Fandance”[/p][p]And anything else tough, difficult, and challenging (read "scary") that takes my fancy.[/p][p]Why? Simply put: Why not.[/p][p]All the while (frankly, this is the most important part as far as this Page is concerned), I’m hoping to raise funds at each and every step along the journey for my selected charities – They are all great organisations, doing fantastic work, supporting the causes they relate to, and helping many many people fight the illnesses and diseases life throws at them. [/p][p]Thank you to all who've inspired me to take this journey - and to those who've supported me (oft-times unbeknownst to themselves through their quiet encouragement).[/p][p]Please do spread the word and please support me on this journey - and more importantly support the chosen charities and the causes they work so hard for.[/p][p]As I'll no doubt tell myself many times along the way - it won't be easy, life isn't - but it did seem like a good idea at the time! [/p][p]Thanks,[/p][p]Alan[/p][p]#GoodIdeaAtTheTime[/p][p]___________________________________________________________________________________[/p][p]UPDATE...[/p][p]So...on Sunday morning, 25th February, I'll be undertaking my second-ever Half Marathon in Richmond Park. All 13.1 miles (21km) of hilly goodness in what is probably London's most scenic park - Not that I'll be doing much sightseeing! Hoping to get a PB: but with a week of head-colds and stomach-bugs just behind me, this may be a bit of an ask - Planning to simply finish may be best![/p][p]This one is Challenge no. 2 of 2018....following in the footsteps of the Brixton 10km race back in January. And hopefully completion of No. 12 of my series of #GoodIdeaAtTheTime Challenges.[/p][p]Last year I completed a total of 10 challenges:[/p][p]- A1EE Mount Leinster TAB, Feb. '17[/p][p]- Regents Park BHF 5km, Mar. '17[/p][p]- Great Ireland Run 10km, Apr. '17[/p][p]- ICHC 150ft Abseil, Apr. '17[/p][p]- El Juanar-Istan 18km Mountain Hike, July '17[/p][p]- A1EE SF Endurance 17.5km TAB, July '17[/p][p]- Dingle Half-marathon, Sept. '17[/p][p]- QUEST Achill Adventure Race, Sept. '17[/p][p]- Tough Mudder, London South, Sept. '17[/p][p]- Construction Rocks, Scala London, Oct. '17[/p][p]This year in 2018 I will be undertaking another 10 personal physical challenges, leading up to some severely-challenging and extreme humdingers during the Summer! (More on those later! )[/p][p]Alan[/p]
