My story

[p]This September Fire Fighters from White Watch - Gorton Fire Station are taking on the Fan Dance Challenge to raise vital funds for the outstanding new HideOut Youth Zone in Gorton.[/p][p]The Fan Dance is a 24KM route March carrying a 20KG Bergen and forms part of the infamous SAS selection test ![/p][p]It is now over 50 years old and still, today forms the first major hurdle on Selection and an indicator as to whether a potential UKSF soldier has the physical and mental determination to complete it within the cut off time set by the D.S (Directing Staff).[/p][p]The challenge begins as soon as the race does with an immediate ascent of Pen y Fan which is 2,907 feet (886 m). The route then descends on the other side of the peak with a pathed route to the halfway point before turning around and reversing the route. The return leg provides an even tougher challenge with the evil ascent back up the Fan known as Jacob’s Ladder.[/p][p]About HideOut Youth Zone[/p][p]Located on Hyde Road in Gorton, HideOut Youth Zone is a charity dedicated to supporting young people. Opening in September 2020, the Youth Zone will be a safe and inspiring place for thousands of young people aged 8 – 19, and up to 25 for those with additional needs, to enjoy their leisure time.[/p][p]Inside the new Youth Zone, young people will be welcomed by friendly, qualified staff and a team of committed volunteers. They will have the opportunity to take part in over 20 fun and engaging activities every evening including sports, arts, music, media, dance and drama.[/p][p]Employability workshops and support will be also available for any young people who need help getting into employment, education or training. Inside HideOut’s enterprise suite, young people will be encouraged to dream big and develop their entrepreneurial skills.[/p][p]An estimated 40% of children in East Manchester are living below the poverty line, with some neighbourhoods within the catchment area of HideOut Youth Zone as high as 50-60%. This leads to other social inequalities including disproportionate levels of childhood obesity, mental health and well-being issues, teenage pregnancy, criminal exploitation and unemployment when compared nationally, all of which have been impacted on further during Covid-19.[/p][p]By providing fantastic opportunities and offering support in a safe and secure environment - HideOut Youth Zone is set to make a real difference to the lives of young people across East Manchester.[/p][vmgvideo class="ql-video" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/Z7_eZzkXi_Q?showinfo=0&rel=0&iv_load_policy=3" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen="true"][/vmgvideo][p][br][/p][p][br][/p]
