My story

[p]I am doing another 24 hour endurance bike ride for Sue Ryder hospices  on 4 July and hope you might able to afford a small donation. [/p] [p]Your donation will help ensure that Sue Ryder can continue to offer hospice and at-home care of the highest standards to people with terminal conditions. They REALLY do great work.[/p] [p]Please read on ...[/p][p][/p][p][lt]img title="Sue Ryder - Incredible care for incurable illness" src="http://www.book-to-ride.com/sue_ryder_motto.jpg" alt="Sue Ryder motto" width="428" height="262" /[gt][/p][p][/p][p][/p][p][/p][p]My target this year is to cycle 594 km in one day, alone. In 2013, when I did the event for the first time, I managed 522km, on my 52nd birthday. In 2014, I managed 558km.[/p][p][/p][p][/p][p][/p][p][lt]img title="Sue Ryder charity bike ride" src="http://www.book-to-ride.com/sue_ryder_2.jpg" alt="Sue Ryder charity bike ride" width="429" height="154" /[gt][/p][p][/p][p][/p][p][/p][p]My route will again be a loop going from Cardington to Old Warden to Ickwell to Northill to Cople and back through Cardington - the loop is 18km, so my target is 33 laps. The course is not flat![/p][p]This equates to 4 years' worth of BRCC Evening League time trials on this course, ridden in one day. Plus one SPOCO loop.[/p][p]I will start at noon, outside the BRCC HQ in Cardington.[/p][p][/p][p]Many thanks in anticiapation of your support.[/p][p][/p][p][lt]img title="GL sign" src="http://www.london-electronics.com/sign_graham_blue.jpg" alt="GL sign" width="155" height="97" /[gt][/p][p][/p][p]The outcome:[/p][p]Well, I didn't achieve my target. I was on course to exceed it up to 200km, after which the heat of the day got the better of me and I abandoned the attempt at 369km at 5am on Sunday.[/p][p]Here is a record of the ride. Note the temperature and my heart rate at around 175km when I began feeling ill, throwing up - I think from mild heat-stroke.[/p][p]At 250km I had the runs as well, and got less and less able to keep up the speed I needed. Eventually, I ground to a halt and that was that.[/p][p][lt]img src="http://www.book-to-ride.com/24h_04072015.png" alt="" width="711" height="275" /[gt][/p][p][/p][p]See full record here[/p][p]I had planned to try again on 18-19 July, but my Mum was admitted to hospital on 16 July and needs close support from her family, so I shall need to re-schedule - perhaps 3rd time lucky![/p][p]Many thanks to everyone who has been so generous to donate - it is greatly appreciated by myself and Sue Ryder Hospice![/p][p][/p][p]All the best,[/p][p]Graham[/p]
