My story

[p]Hi, thanks for visiting my page. [/p][p]This is the first time I’ve volunteered to jog, walk and/or crawl 42km (26 miles).[/p][p]Before this seems to be a shameless plea to fund my London marathon experience, please take 5 minutes of your time to read about the charity I am supporting, a charity which is ‘close-to-home’ for me, and due to the current ridiculous ZAR:GBP exchange rate, we have the ability to make a significant contribution to fulfil the objectives of this charity (as I explain further on…).[/p][p][span=text-decoration: underline;]Brief background of my chosen charity - Old Grey Charitable Trust [/span][/p][p]My old school, Grey High School in Port Elizabeth, resides in the Eastern Cape province of South Africa. The school, over 150 years old, prides itself in providing a well-rounded environment where pupils can interact with others from diverse backgrounds, not limited to a specific wealth class, race or religion.[/p][p]The school is classified as a ‘semi-private’ school, due to the fact that although it is partly government funded, this government contribution has not corresponded with increases in costs over the years, and increased dependence on funding from old pupils is required to maintain this diverse mix of pupils.[/p][p]The importance of such funding is perfectly illustrated through the story of Siya Kolisi, the current Springbok rugby player, who obtained a bursary to Grey High School – an inspiring story, illustrating how a bursary programme provided an individual with a platform and support to reach his/her potential.[/p][p]A bursary programme was set up 10years ago (and related UK charitable trust 9 years ago), by old boys residing in the UK. Over the 10 year period, this bursary trust has helped nearly 20 pupils obtain a Grey education.[/p][p][span=text-decoration: underline;]Proposal[/span][/p][p]As the Barmy Army so succinctly put it at the SA vs England cricket match last week [sung to the tune of 'he's got the whole world in his hands]: “we got 23 rand to the pound, we got 23 rand to the pound, we got 23 rand to the pound, we got 23 to the pound……we so rich it’s unbelievable”![/p][p]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TxKUiu5jdVI[/p][p]Per my old school’s website, the current annual fees at Grey High School are R40 200. At a current (Sunday eve 24/01/16) ZAR:GBP  exchange rate of 23.50, this would equal £1710.64 in pound terms, for us to single-handedly put a kid through 1 year of high school at an established institution, providing him the platform to fulfil his potential.[/p][p]For this reason, I have upped the expected benchmark of £1 500 to £1 710.64 as an initial target. Your contribution would genuinely be appreciated, and as illustrated by Siya's inspiring journey, will go a long way in making a huge difference in a kid’s life.[/p]
