My story

[p]On June 17th I will be running my first big race in 5 years when I take on the Cheltenham Challenge Half Marathon. [/p][p]I will be raising money for two charities. The first is The Glacier Trust. The Glacier Trust enables climate change adaptation in Nepal. They help some of the poorest people in the world to adapt to the damage being done by climate change. The Glacier Trust sends 100% of the money raised by its supporters to Nepal. Not one penny is spent on salaries or overheads. You can find out more about this brilliant charity and its work here: [/p][p]http://www.theglaciertrust.org[/p][p]The second charity I will b raising money for is LATCH, a cancer charity close to my heart having been diagnosed with leukaemia as a 12 year old back in 1992. LATCH supports the children and their families who are being treated by the Oncology Unit at the Children’s Hospital of Wales whose catchment area stretches from Chepstow in the South to Aberystwyth in the North. Around 70 new cases are diagnosed every year.[/p][p]When a child has been diagnosed with cancer or leukaemia, the chemotherapy+ and/or chemotherapy treatment can last from six months to three years depending on the type. Follow up treatment and checkups mean that a child who has been diagnosed with cancer will be under medical supervision for over 5 years.[/p][p]Advances in medical technology means that the prognosis for many is good.[/p][p]According to Cancer Research UK[/p][p]More children than ever are surviving cancer[/p][p]The survival rate for children’s cancer has more than doubled since the 1960s[/p][p]Almost three quarters of children with cancer are now cured of the disease compared with around a quarter in the late 1960s[/p][p]For every ten children diagnosed with cancer, almost eight now survive for five years or more, compared with fewer than three in ten in the late 1960s.[/p][p]For more information please visit here:[/p][p]http://www.latchwales.org/[/p][p]The Half Marathon route presents a tough challenge for experienced distance runners and a rewarding route for walkers. This event is open to ages 17 and over only.[/p][p]It is a multi-terrain 13.1 mile (21k approx.) route using public footpaths and sections of the Cheltenham Circular Footpath, Cotswold Way and Winchcombe Way.[/p][p]The terrain starts fairly level for the first 3 miles, passing through Prestbury village and heading towards Hewletts Reservoir. Then there is a long tough climb up to join the Cotswold Way and Winchcombe Way before heading north across the top of Cleeve Hill. You will pass over the highest point in the Cotswolds. The route offers fantastic views over Cheltenham, the Malverns and glorious Cotswold countryside.[/p][p]Rejoining the Cotswold Way near the golf course, the route loops southwards along the edge of the escarpment before descending through a forest towards Southam. There is then a fairly flat run through farmland and Prestbury Village before heading back to the finish line at the racecourse. There is approximately 380m of ascent on the loop.[/p][p]As you can see this is huge challenging run, one I intend to give my all to complete in a PB. Please donate generously.[/p]
