My story

[p]Steps2Recovery is an independent charity working with ex-offenders with addiction issues. We strongly believe that if our clients can be helped into long term, abstinence-based recovery they have the chance to end the cycle of addiction, offending and short prison sentences that does so much damage to not only themselves but their families and the wider community. Since opening our house in Stoke Newington in 2014, where our extraordinary counsellors run a 12-week programme, they have achieved impressive results; 60% of our graduates are still clean and have not re-offended six months after completeing our programme - which compares to a success rate of only 6.9% in Hackney and the City of London. Sending an alcoholic/addict to prison simply doesn't work and we have shown that there is a credible alternative to incarceration that is not only highly effective but is considerably less expensive. Based on the success that we have achieved, we feel passionately that systemic change is needed in the Criminal Justice System and we will strongly campaign for this moving forward.[/p] [p][/p] [p]It costs Steps2Recovery £5,000 to fund each client through our 12-week programme (the cost of 12 weeks in prison is approximately £9,000).  We provide a unique service based on need and not on the individual's ability to access funding which means that we have to raise all the money needed to continue this invaluable work.[/p][p]Please give anything you can - every little bit helps; this work really does make a huge difference.[/p][p][/p][p][/p][p][/p] [p][/p]
