My story

[p] In September I will attempt something I thought I would never do...cycling... and lots of it. [/p][p] I will be cycling around 400km through Sardinia over four days. The hardest part is that most of it is uphill – I will be climbing an average of 1000m a day. Oh and the cycling is then followed by 30km of sea kayaking, going from the South to the North of the island... [/p][p] For those in any doubt I am not a cyclist. Until 4 weeks ago I didn’t even own a bike, I didn’t know what a ‘cleat’ was, and Id never worn lycra. I’ve discovered I’m totally the wrong shape for this sport; I’m essentially a large, heavy windbreak. And lets not get started on the canoeing. It will be tough but its for a cause that I really believe in. I am so grateful for your support – every penny I raise will go straight to the causes supported by Big Change. [/p][p] Why am I doing this? [/p][p] In support of Big change, a charity that is close to my heart. Their mission is to support the next generation to thrive in life, not just exams. There’s a lot to celebrate in the world today but also a lot to be concerned by; inequality is actually on the rise in much of the world as the divergence between rich and poor increases. Big Change looks to address this issue through the education system. [/p][p] [/p][p] Some Stats I think are important: [/p][p] • Postcode still remains the most powerful predictor of educational outcomes in the West.[/p][p] • The UK ranks as having one of lowest levels of social mobility in the world. (24% of[/p][p] vice-chancellors, 32% of MPs, 51% of medics, 54% of top journalists, 70% of high court[/p][p] judges went to a private school, yet only 7% of the population does.[/p][p] [/p][p] Teachers [/p][p] • 40% of teachers leave the profession within 5 years of qualifying.[/p][p] • Applications for teaching posts are down by 33% year-on-year, leaving 30,000 job[/p][p] vacancies.[/p][p] [/p][p] Oracy[/p][p] • An average inner-city child will only speak 4 words a lesson[/p][p] • By the time a child from a low-income family leaves school they would have heard 30[/p][p] million fewer words than from a high-income family.[/p][p] [/p][p] BIG CHANGE Supports:[/p][p] Voice 21 - a project that supports schools and teachers across England to develop students’ speaking skills and improve the quality of talk in the classroom. [/p][p] EasyPeasy – an app that sends game ideas, hints and tips to parents of pre-school children, to help develop the skills that will prepare them for school and beyond.[/p][p] The Institute for Teaching - aims to develop best in class teacher training to create expertise in the profession. Big Change funding will improve the development and delivery of a world class holistic curriculum. The central teaching program will not only focus on the technical and academic process of teaching but will ensure that psychological and wellbeing aspects of performance are central to the teaching program.[/p][p] [/p]
