My story

[p]I'd been working at Grandparents Plus for all of 2 days when I signed up to the run the Royal Parks half-marathon for them. I could already see how difficult it can be for kinship families and, as part of a small team at Grandparents Plus, I could see the difference we make and how much more we can achieve. [/p][p]I am running the Royal Parks half marathon with my sister Liz who is also running for Grandparents Plus. This is the first time we've run together since being overtaken by kareoke man and a man dressed as a toilet at the London Marathon over 5 years ago. With the run less than a week away, for all my nerves, I know we'll be proud to wear the Grandparents Plus logo and raise money to support kinship carers (and I hope this will motivate us both enough to cross that finish line!)[/p][p]A bit more about Grandparents Plus:[/p][p]Grandparents Plus is the only national charity (England and Wales) dedicated to supporting kinship carers – family and friends raising children who aren't able to live with their parents. It is estimated that there are 200,000 children in kinship carer. That’s three times the number of children in foster care - and it is increasing. [/p][p]Typically, kinship carers are older, in poor health and live in poverty – 75% of children in kinship care are growing up in deprived households. Of the children growing up in kinship care 66% have experienced abuse or neglect, 68% parental drug or alcohol misuse and others a parent’s mental illness or death. [/p][p]Through our advice service and network, we help kinship carers by providing support, giving independent guidance, and connecting them with each other. Our programmes are developed with kinship carers for kinship carers, and are changing lives by strengthening families across the country.[/p]
